Roof color does matter. What color will the new roof be?

I was thinking I would pick roof color after I have a paint color, I’m thinking a grey color for roof, old one is brown, and I think it would also look better with brick colors. Any ideas on house color?

White, pale green, pale yellow depends on how dark the gray roof will be

Before deciding on a paint color (which are endless and grey roofs are so versatile), consider how you want house to feel. For instance, if you will be replacing fence, the house would suit a soft pastel. You could paint shutters the same, but could also paint an accent color and continue on the scalloped shingles and porch roof. Have you driven around your neighbour for inspiration.

If not installing a picket fence, I’d head towards a less cute look.

Landscaping will be really important

That’s so funny, I never thought about a pale color, usually people say go with a color that was popular in 40' s, whatever that would be, when we purchased it, it was colonial blue, I didn’t like it, painted it a color called downtown brown & after several years it has faded into pink, not a pretty pink! White has been mentioned by several friends but what would all the trim be? Not sure .... I like muted shades too... on the fence I think it’s going to come down, I would like a fence but I was thinking about brick about 6 inches high & maybe a black fence, not wood though... I loved all your pictures Maureen! My neighborhood is some of everything, cottagey , older homes, shotgun houses... Maureen when you said replacing fence, did you mean if I keep picket fence go with pastel or try another type of fence for pastel, I don’t really want cutesy....

I would remove the shutters and the side metal pieces and put in a white railing.

I would do a grey brown roof like this one

Color palette, that coordinates with your neighbors:
Dahlia for the door
The beige or martini color for the house
One of the whites for the trim and railings and posts.

Dark grey roof. It's neutral and goes with everything. That will give you time to make final determination on house.

How about white body and trim, with haint blue porch ceilings and shutter color of your choice? Shutter color is a lot easier to change than body color.

My personal favorite is French Quarter Green or Charleston Green shutters. More black with a hint of green than green with a hint of black. The custom formula is available by telephone from the uptown New Orleans Sherwin-Williams.

Your shingles do not need to be one solid color. A gray shingled roof can be a mix of grays. A brown shingled roof can be a mix of tans and light to medium browns.

A metal roof would be one color. Personally prefer a medium shade of whatever color rather than a very light or dark color for metal roofs.

Would either keep all the white trim on the house white or repaint it choosing a different shade of your choice of house color -- either lighter or darker.

Would paint all the siding one color

Unless you specifically want/need the shutters for privacy, wouldn't keep them in the front of the porch.

Would remove rather than repair the rotting "picket" fence as a picket fence -- but creating a different fence is a good idea. Creating porch railing with the same look will be important for curb appeal.

You could replace current posts with 4"x4" treated posts -- spaced four feet apart -- and do paint the part of the post that will be in the ground with sealant even if you're going to leave the fence natural wood. There are a lot of different style of fencing so you do not need to go back to the picket fence -- choose the kind you like, taking into consideration whether or not you have pets or young children. Begin by paying attention to fencing already in your neighborhood and what you like and don't like about it.

This fencing is interesting, has "feet" to raise it off the ground to protect against rot yet would be useful if you have small children -- not so much if you need to secure small pets.

A wood fence atop a short block or brick or stone wall could secure small pets -- but do pay attention to drainage issues before choosing that.

If your fencing is mostly to define your yard and protect your landscaping, a basic two or three horizontal board fence could work well for that.

You have enough of a step down that, while your railing is removed and before you replace it, you might consider adding a more finished floor to your porch and then refinish the vertical front and sides as well along with your steps and even your sidewalk.
