Pics from my gardens (pic heavy)
Comments (37)Ron, came across your post which I missed before...what a beautiful place you have. I am in the midst of planting shade companion plants, so appreciate your thoughts on light for the list you have. Hope you will keep posting pics! Oh, forgot...the potted hostas that you overwinter in the garage...do you have any special tricks for overwintering? I have done it 3-4 years now with about an 85% rate, but I'd like to improve on that because I do not like losing even one! I overwintered some out in our shed this last year instead of the garage, and the mice got into them and I lost a bunch. My biggest problems have to do with springtime moisture levels...I do not water them at all in the garage, come spring, I try to make sure at least 1/2 have broken dormancy before going outside. (Leave them in the garage too long, they dry out and die, water them in the garage, or take them out too early, they can rot.) Would love to hear how you handle yours. For this next year, I'm thinking about giving each small one an ice cube in Feb/March. Just to add some moisture back in as the weather warms up....See MoreJust checking in....
Comments (35)I've been so busy outside I haven't had much time to do anything else. I'm way behind on everything this year. The little bit of rain we got last Saturday really helped alot, but yesterday it was back to watering and watering again. I did buy some new dishes at the flea market last weekend and will post pics soon. I miss getting to come to the board as much as I would like & hope I don't miss anyone's posts. Kathleen, That dinner looks delicious. And of course we want the recipe for the chicken marsalis please. And I've never heard of carrot fritters either. You have to share them with us also please. Jaybird, When you're known for doing something well you're always the first one asked to do it! ;~) I love stained glass. And I bet your piece is just beautiful. Mary, I love your pink dishes and can't wait to see them on your table. They are some of the prettiest I've seen. I love to paint! Hopefully we'll be painting our utility room soon. DH has to build some cabinets for me first. Books of any kind are something I can never give up. I love reading. I don't buy cookbooks any more as it's so easy to find recipes online. I have a cookbook from the early 1900s that is a very small hardback. It has a lot of recipes for cooking sweetbreads & "Rocky Mountain Oysters". It's very interesting reading, but nothing I would ever cook. And shame on you for dragging your NY friend into our dish obsession! LOL I do hope that your friend brings you back some dishes from Wegman's. How nice of her to offer. Karen, I'm so sad for your family that your GS has to go back to Iraq and hope all of our troops come home safely. How wonderful that your family had a family dinner for your GS. I know you all enjoyed it so much. I hope you're feeling better now and get to hit those new stores....See MoreMy New Old house. pics
Comments (12)Aw Shucks Thanks everyone!!! Our house has been a long time coming. We have lived in "crappy old farmhouse" for almost 15 years. Our new house is about 100 feet behind the old one. Kimberly- the porch flooring is Ipe - Brazilian walnut. I learned about it online- check out the porch and deck forum here. It does require some maintenance but it is minimal and then it should last 100 years. I was not pleased with the reviews and the look of most of the composites. Really happy with how this looks. Owl - I can't wait to check out your site.. .my home computer is dial up so it will take me awhile...after everyone else is in bed ( with my evening vino!) Not much happening inside yet..... drywallers where supposed to start today but didn't show... contractor was not happy. The basics... white woodwork, hickory floors. Slate in our clutter room, mudrooms and bathrooms- although that is all open to change ( well except the hickory!) I have a few friends who are into "authentic" old interiors and I don't find those liveable so it will be more of an electic farmhouse type on the inside. Cabinets will be a frost glaze birch with black Zodiaq on one side of the kitchen. Other side will be Oak cabinets with almost black finish and ligher Zodiaq. Pedestal sinks in master, very plain rectangular soaking tub, Walk in shower with slate with river rock floor. When I can't decided on what I want I err toward the simple/plain. Simplicity to the extreme is elegance. There's a brief overview!!! I will post pics on the blog as it goes. Totally blessed- are you building a barn at your new property? Horses are like crack to me. I have to have one in my life (or 11) or all I can think about is getting another one. I am a veterinarian so it's also an occupational hazard. Love the Chincoteague ponies.... that's a trip we need to make soon. Joan- well you have noticed the pony of my heart- my red headed child- Cat. She is a Connemara as are the others. We have quite the herd - 5 now with 2 on the way. Cat does have a full brother for sale... I think he will be a little larger than her. He's not mine.... but I could hook you up!! We also raise TBs - could hook you up there too!! Connemaras are like the dirt bikes of the equine world. Cat is the most athletic thing I have ever been around. She literally can canter through the BARN doing flying changes. She is 13.1 - a little small for me. I have her mother also- she is 14.2. She is bred to a 15 h stallion who was recently sent back to Ireland. Really excited about that foal. Have to stop talking horses....LOL. It's a nice distraction from house stuff...... I am regretting I didn't put a tack room in the house LOL- but then I wouldn't have a reason to remodel the barn! My current kitchen is knotty pine.... I think we will put those cabinets in a tack room someday. It's just money!!!...See MoreQOTD What other forums on the Garden Web?
Comments (21)I started out on the Florida Gardening Forum, then found this one, and I spend the most time on these two. I have visited others out of curiosity: Pets, Sewing, Natives, Garden Junk, Recipes, Cookware, and some others. I think all of them are of value, but Quilting on the whole has the most supportive people who are willing to welcome newbies and share their knowledge and at the same time are comfortable in asking for advice without feeling intimidated. I posted a question once on one forum about a certain type of conifer that I had just bought and was derided for only buying the common stuff found at the big box stores so I knew right away they weren't very welcoming of non-experts' participation. So it seems that there are some forums that only encourage expert participation which is fine if you're searching for an answer to a question but not too friendly for us unwashed people who don't know everything about everything! I'm with Rosa, life is too short for grumps and trolls....See Morel pinkmountain
