How can I tell if I've overwatered or underwater my Moro orange tree?

After my first couple irrigations of the spring, some of the older leaves throughout the tree started turning bronze, then yellow, then falling. The new growth is green and looks good. But I don't want to lose any more older leaves if I can help it! It started to happen suddenly so I don't think it's a normal leaf drop. Simultaneously, I started to irrigate because the temp changed (in mid 70s, with a couple days in the 80s). The soil is not soggy but it has been irrigated and is not bone dry. Even though I haven't irrigated too much, I'm inclined to think that the tree feels it's too much water...but how can I tell? Is there a sure distinction I can make (leaf-wise) between over and under watering?
