NO idea what to do with kitchen in new house
Comments (1)I think it just needs something to ground it. If you had a nice medium color wood floor I think it would appear more grounded and warmer. If that's too much work or not in the budget, maybe just paint the island a medium dark neutral (brown, grey, etc.). If it's the wall color that bothers you, try playing with that. It's hard to suggest a wall color when I don't know what the rest of the house is painted in. The FIRST thing I wuold do is to change out the hardware. You would probably get more opinions on the Conversations side. Good luck and keep us posted! Congratulations on your house and your baby! I know what nesting feels like and can empathize with you, however don't stress about it now. It won't be the end of the world if you can't get the kitchen done in time, just take care of yourself and get the rest you need now!!...See MoreNew (to us) house... kitchen ideas
Comments (8)Thanks all for the comments. practigal- Island moveable... here in Texas it seems they like to put down a slab, then cabinets, then flooring. We'd have to redo some of the tile to move the island, but I'm not against patching the flooring... especially if we can find some tile in the attic. What were your thoughts on moving the island? Would shrinking it make it more useful? Cooktop... Induction may be a possibility if we can't get gas to work. However, we love cooking with gas and would like to stay away from glass cooktops. My wife hates having to be so careful not to scratch them. Bulkheads... I didn't think about the floor above. There is a bathroom directly above the kitchen. I surely hope they didn't run the plumbing thru them. I'll be able to find out when we do some investigative demo. Cabinets... We thought about refacing the cabinets, but I'd like to get some more functionality out of them and while we're at it something better looking than oak. I'd like some more drawers than the single stack that's in there now. I like the idea of trash as a pullout. We hide the can in the pantry currently, but I don't think the pantry in the new house will be big enough. jpmom- we hadn't considered stacked cabinets, but the inspiration photo looks beautiful. This may help too if we want to get rid of bulkheads but find stuff in them. DIY2Much2Do- 1) I like the idea of pantry cabinets flanking the fridge... great location. However, if we kept the oven on that wall, how would it interact with the island? How much of a distance would we want so we could open the doors? I think we currently have about 3' of an aisle way. Of course a range would solve that problem too. Not sure what to do. ugh. 2) I was just thinking about the DW as well. And again, the island seems to get in the way if we move it to the other side of the sink. I *think* we have more aisle space on this side of the island at roughly 40", but I'm not sure on the exact placement of it. However, if we end up tearing down to the walls, I'd rather make decisions that will work better for us than just following the old footprint just because. 3) Yes! I'm a fan of drawers... we'll keep some doors, but more drawers are in order. Again, many thanks for y'alls thoughts. Comments (30)On the topic of cabinet finish.. as many stated the finish from the manufacturer will far surpass an onsite paint job. It is true you seem to save if you paint yourselves, but through the upgrade option, do you also get internal upgrades? Is all the hardware soft close (hinges and drawers) Is your overlay a full or standard? Look up cabinet construction Another question -if you switched out cabinets after- is the countertop. If you plan on a solid surface, removing cabinets to switch out after the fact could be VERY expensive... 1- can the stone be salvaged, 2-If not you will have the cost of a whole new countertop! I also considered doing things to the kitchen after we moved in and opted out of that.. Boy was I glad. Life moves fast and when you move in you really want to move in. I'd go with builder and what you really want and avoid all the small surprises that will arise doing work after the fact. Good luck in your process!!...See Morenew house/new kitchen ideas needed
Comments (2)Are you doing a gut remodel? If you post a 2D measured plan, people can help with layout ideas. That cooktop/oven location is pretty much the worst imaginable. No landing area on the left, teeny landing area on the right, in the traffic pattern to the sliding door, and next to seating....See Morenhb22
