Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Need a second opinion on shower/bathroom renovation

Hi folks! I'm nearing the end of a renovation of my condo (kitchen and two bathrooms) with a local contracting company, and there's an outstanding issue in my master bathroom that I would like to have addressed. I expanded my shower which required a custom pour. The contractor built a shower curb that is tiled on the inside and outside and the curb top is a quartz countertop piece that matches the new vanity countertops. From what I assume is poor planning, the curb top extends slightly over the barrier and into the door casing. The outside wall of the curb is also oddly slanted and he cut the door casing to accommodate the slant, which just looks sloppy.

I've raised the issue verbally and in writing at various stages and was told to have faith because it would look great in the end. Well, we're at the end and this doesn't look great. It's primarily an aesthetic issue (photos below) but I'm hoping to get a second opinion from folks who are more knowledgeable or in the industry so when I speak with the contractor again, I can do so with input/knowledge rather than saying "this just doesn't look good."

Who decided on the measurements of the new shower and short divider? Is there a drawing you signed off on?

Are you using a shower curtain or is the a door/glass that is to be installed?

It doesn’t look great, I agree, but it will look better if you fill in the gap between the tile and door molding with caulk.

Thanks for your reply! I decided on the measurements of the new shower (based on what could fit in the space, as there's a bathtub on the other side of the shower), but the contractor decided on the measurement of the divider. It's wider/chunkier than I would have liked, but I wasn't asked for input and assumed that was because that's a standard size. There were no drawings provided.

Glass is going to be installed next week.

I don't know what shape the space you have available is, but I wanted to show you the layout of a 3/4 bath in an apartment I once had just to give you an idea of how efficiently such a small space can be used. This room was 7 feet long and between 3 1/2 and 4 feet wide. This layout made the shower remarkably spacious for a tiny apartment bathroom that was very much "shoehorned in" - it was the third floor of an 1880s three-flat/"triple-deckah" in South Boston that had never had space set aside for a bathroom until WWII! Talk to your plumBer :-) about the feasibility of putting in the plumBing :-) for the toilet. It may well not be as difficult as one might think. Rearranging your layout to put the toilet in closest possible proximity to the soil stack may be a smart thing to do as shower drain pipes are a lot smaller than toilets' and so somewhat easier to run hither and yon. You will probably need to take out either the ceiling of the floor below or the subfloor of what will be the new bathroom to give the plumber enough access to run the plumbing around where it needs to go. Oh, and pocket doors are a thing of beauty if you're short on space. They've come a long way from those wretched hollowcore monstrosities of the 60s and 70s - they've gone back to more like the solid pocket doors of the turn of the 20th century. Love love love them. No wasted space for the door swing!

Will this new bath be on the first floor? If so and there's room on that floor for a bedroom or a room that could be convered to a bedroom I'd go a step farther and make sure the new bathroom was ELDERLY friendly, you will increase your pool of potential buyers. The baby boomer generation is having to deal with a aging parents moving them into their homes, having a bathroom that was elderly friendly with a bedroom or a room that could be converted to a bedroom will put you miles ahead of other homes in the area. Go with faucets that are easy for the elderly to turn on and off, built=in seat in the shower, low or no lip on the shower itself, hand rails, rounded corners. It's not that much more dollar wise and it could become a real selling point.

We installed a Dreamline 38" neoangle shower pan, surround, and glass about two years ago, and have been very happy with it. It is in a basement bath, so we used the fiberglass/acrylic surround kit instead of tile. We have cement board on the walls behind the surround, but the surround kit makes it simple because its waterproof, so you can even use standard drywall if you want. One change we made with the corner shower is to put an extension on the shower head fitting so that we could bring it up to the ceiling and get a rainfall effect for the shower head. We initially had the shower head on one wall, but it sprayed out into the bath if you didn't point it to one side when you turned it on. Then you had to move it back to center when you got in the shower. The straight down head makes it much easier because the spray also goes straight down. Dreamline also has rectangular shower kits, and I assume they work the same as the neoangle we installed. We put the base on a cement floor, supported by a bed of mortar (per the instructions), and it is very stable. The fiberglass/acrylic surround kit looks fine and works very well, but I would recommend tile if its in a more visible bath. The glass kit went on smoothly and worked well. Bruce

What do you mean by “oddly slanted?”

A shower curb top must be slanted toward the inside of the shower.

Can you take a photo looking downward at the place where the curb meets the wall and the door molding? I bet those who know what they are looking at will need that view, too.

Wow, that curb looks dangerously tall. I'd trip over it.

And no, the curb shouldn't have slanting verticals. They should be actually vertical.

Where's the drain? I don't see a slant on the floor?

@ Nancy in Mich - the outside wall of the curb is oddly slanted where it meets the door casing. You can see that the casing has been cut on a slant to accommodate the slant in the curb. The curb top is actually dead level, which worries me a bit since I know it's supposed to slant toward the shower.

@ tangerinedoor Yes, the curb is quite high. It's not so bad on the shower side, since the custom pour raised the height of the shower floor from the bathroom floor. The contractor decided on the height (and the width) based on the space needed for the herringbone design but it's taller and wider than I would have liked.

The drain is a tiled drain so it blends in with the shower floor - which is actually well slanted. There are no issues with water draining in the shower based on tests but I haven't actually used the shower as I'm waiting for glass to be installed.
