finishing touches on “Great Room” & fireplace

This a combo living area with fire place and kitchen .. the builders walked off the job and we have yet obtained the CO to live here. It will be 3years in July since our home burned down and construction on the original foundation started. The antique mantle was rescued from the fire. The builders for some reason without approval installed particle board shelves to either side of fire place. It’s horrible. We will be mounting a large TV above the mantle but need help in with selecting material and finishing the fireplace. also we do really need to add color which could be achieved by rich and colorful window panels/curtains seen in second image.

Any help would be extremely appreciated. whenever i post about this nightmare new construction I always get really helpful advice and ideas! So thanks everyone!

I cannot make out what is around the fireplace opening. It looks like there are some marble slab pieces just floating there with some drywall. Can you post a higher resolution picture closer to the fireplace so we can make out the details. The Mantel is beautiful, but the fireplace does not fit the proportions of the mantel. Is it a direct vent gas fireplace with a sealed glass front?

Also, are you keeping the hearth? I see it has a "B" in the center, which seems rather intentional.

Here's a mockup that helps bring some things back into proportion.

Just using marble slab like what is already there, but made to fit the whole fireplace. Unfortunately, this type of screen will sit right on top of the "B".

Just thought I'd throw this together to start the conversation.

Thanks so much for your post. You pointed out some things I missed. The mantle was rescued from the house fire and we are trying to retrofit the same mantle and fireplace in the new home. We also rescued the marble with the “B” but it was there from the former owners of our old home. We would prefer the letter “D” which represents our family name. Also the hearth is quite stained from the fire. What type of material would you suggest using - I really love the mock-up drawing you did! It’s looks great

Thanks it is an exciting time for us! She is so happy:) here are some Images from my sons wedding it was so pretty...my daughter in law found this women that rents out all these vintage old pieces and creates beautiful centerpieces and than the florist added flowers and succulents..it was something I had never seen before....hard to top for sure!

I think you need more on your coffee table, maybe bring in some of the colors from the painting over the sideboard. Get a pretty basket/container for the dog toys!

Great start Nancy !!!! The rug is NOT to big !! Looks great, def. see some color added tho, what colors do you like is really the question. You can do almost anything. Can you face the couch toward the fp, and flank the 2 chairs with side and perhaps the club chair next to the pf wit a small table? you only know if you try it. One larger brighter piece over the fp will make it appear larger and of course brighter. If you leave the 2 chairs in front of the fp, try a small round table in-between otherwise they look disconnected. Hope this helps a bit, have fun, good luck, best, Debra

I'd like to see the front chair legs resting on the rug. That can be done by moving the sofa and rug towards the media unit, as suggested. Doing so will include the chair in the seating area as defined by the rug. Now might be a good time to edit, as well. There's a lot of input in this room, and all of your things are very cool. Take a curatorial approach so the "important" items have room to shine without competition. Perhaps re-purpose the end tables to another room. Instead of a table lamp, consider a floor lamp for the corner to the left of the fireplace. The wall light might work well above the chair. It's current position sort of takes away from your photo gallery wall. The added bonus is that you would have good reading light. And I really like the idea of a console beneath your large photograph on the wall in question! Topped with a table lamp and some greenery, it would be a great vignette. You may not need an end table if the ottoman is sufficient. If not, consider a low key c-table.
