The sofa area is visually busy so I like the calm uncluttered area behind your sofa. Maybe at most a narrow sofa table to help define the space (I assume those are bar stools at kitchen counter?). Furniture is nice but heavy, so maybe side tables that have metal (something that coordinates with bookcases)? Can you spread out the greenery on bookshelves?

But take this with grain of salt-- I'm not a pro!!

Agree with Sina. Alternatively, you could put a small console table with a couple of upholstered seating cubes under the framed art and move your plant. The cubes will provide some additional places to sit when you have guests and can be tucked away when not in use.

Suggestions are great. Would you consider putting wood bookcases on each side of the fireplace where you have the pipe ones? I know you did not ask so ignore it you want to.

I would pull the sofa away from the wall about a foot and use a regular floor lamp at the corner. I think that anything behind the sofa will create a cluttered look. I would somehow incorporate more lamps so that the harsh overhead lighting can be turned off. Your furnishings are beautiful.

I don’t have much to offer. You’ve done a pretty good job so far. I agree that space looks a little bare but I wouldn’t crowd it too much. Curious to see what you do with it.

I do wonder if you switch the art collage above the sofa with the large single art of that would help the sofa area look less busy?

And LOLd at your plant needle comment. Good one! :-)

I'd like to see the front chair legs resting on the rug. That can be done by moving the sofa and rug towards the media unit, as suggested. Doing so will include the chair in the seating area as defined by the rug.

Now might be a good time to edit, as well. There's a lot of input in this room, and all of your things are very cool. Take a curatorial approach so the "important" items have room to shine without competition.

Perhaps re-purpose the end tables to another room. Instead of a table lamp, consider a floor lamp for the corner to the left of the fireplace. The wall light might work well above the chair. It's current position sort of takes away from your photo gallery wall. The added bonus is that you would have good reading light. And I really like the idea of a console beneath your large photograph on the wall in question! Topped with a table lamp and some greenery, it would be a great vignette.

You may not need an end table if the ottoman is sufficient. If not, consider a low key c-table.

A huge thanks for everyone's input. Re-positioning the rug is the resounding consensus so that will be the first thing to do. I think I'll also do the floor lamp in the corner, with c-table on other end, simplify the shelves, and console/ottomans on the wall space.

Question....Yay or nay to adding simple scones on either side of fireplace frame? I had originally thought of doing this but I hear your suggestions about paring down.

What size is your rug? Is there a TV on the right? Can you stand in front of the potted plant and shoot toward that side of the room?

The rug is 9x12. I’m thinking of turning it around to get the effect the others have suggested and still not have it too close to FP. Or can switch it out to another room if this isn’t the best option for the LR

Not a fan of the round end table. I'd change that.

I would consider moving the two pictures beside the TV console to the side of the TV. You've got a lot happening on the fireplace wall. Moving the pictures would help balance things a bit.

I'd leave the back of the sofa clear and put a table on the wall with the needle plant.

The rug does seem a little large. You don't want it less than 15" from the hearth and not blocking the sliders either. I like them to slip under the front 1/3 of a sofa and extend a foot or more on either end. Try taping out some standard rug sizes with painter's tape to know what you're looking for when you replace it. I also find the pipe shelves too busy; even if they were empty they just call too much attention to themselves. Unless one of you is a professional photographer, here's an overload of photos in this room. I'd look to move some of the standing ones to table tops. It is more interesting to layer large, medium and small ones in a grouping than to have them standing around like soldiers. End tables will eat up floor space, so a floor lamp and a couple of C tables will work better here. You could try the round table by the chair since there is no place to set anything down near it.

Overall you have a very nice space! I was thinking the same as you, mamazc, turn that rug 90 degrees and see how it fits. I think you have a lot of great styling going on and I like your pipe shelving but agree it could be pared down. The one on the left seems to have items better suited to the size. Maybe get some stacked colorful books (think garage/estate sales) to fill up some space instead of a lot of small items. What is underneath those shelves? Maybe a basket on each side to ground the shelves a bit... Put your firewood in one and some colorful blankets in the other.

You've gotten a lot of good suggestions - and I'll add one more: I think that the art above the fireplace could be a bigger/poster sized vertical piece that you could rest on the mantle. The piece you have there now feels like it gets lost. I think you have great elements in this room.
