over budget landscaping

We have a challenging yard so we hired a landscape architect asking "what can we do with $xxxx?" We were not sure if a pool was feasible- I asked for a spool or very small pool. Or hot tub. He gave us an estimate for his services. The first plans had a huge pool. The plans were very good and detailed, which I appreciated, but the pool was too big. I questioned the cost of so many large boulders in the design. He said they didn't cost that much. He also designed features we did not ask for. So he redesigned the pool and we agreed on a plan to hand to a landscaper. The landscaping cost came in at almost twice our budget. The boulders were a third of the budget. So now the architect is taking things out and making things smaller. (I wanted a smaller patio) Well, we got the bill for the second redesign which was double the total estimate for his time. I asked him why are we paying for redesign when he did not work within our parameters? No answer yet but what is my obligation here? Of course he hasn't sent the redesign. But he didn't respect our constant reminder of a target budget so why do I hear the cost of eliminating the extras?

Was the $xxxx budget meant to include both his service and the landscaper's costs? Did he know that? Unfortunately, the first time we do something like this you and I do not know what questions to ask, and we don't know the process. The people who work in the field don't have a clue that they are not communicating with us. And, frankly, you did not communicate well with him. You should have insisted on a $ amount for "not that much". You should have had several pool installers visit your house and give you an estimate. Note that an estimate is not the same thing as a bid, but at least you would have had an idea of the cost. You can visit local stone suppliers and get an idea of how much boulders cost.

It does not matter what I or anyone else thinks about your landscape architect. He did the work you asked for, and you owe him for that. It is not his fault that installing the pool and landscaping cost more than you want to pay. Cut your losses; take whatever plans he has done and pay him. Then decide what you can still use of his plans.

I don't understand why you'd be paying your landscape designer for an estimate? An estimate should be free, no? And why would they be estimating unless you had agreement about the scope of the project? If you made clear your budget limit, and he figured the plan he dreamed up was way over your $$$ guideline, that's on him, not on you.

Get references for a landscaper that provides quality plant material and uses proper planting procedures. If you're unfamiliar with the area, ask around at garden clubs, local gardens, etc. Give the landscaper a budget number that you're willing to spend right now along with the area you want landscaped. Have them draw up a plan that fits that budget. You can always add to the area as time goes by if you need to fill in. Before we started our build, we had a landscape architect come out and design the entire 3-1/2 acres. She sited the house, septic, pool, driveways, planting beds, etc. Just after our house was finished, we hired a landscaper to do the front and side foundation plantings to get a finished look. Since then we have been preparing beds and finishing the rest of the landscaping ourselves based on her plan. We do have the landscaper come in to plant extremely large trees because we don't have the equipment to handle them. As far as percentages go, it does depend on where you live (subdivision vs. rural, big city vs. small town). We may eventually spend close to 10% when it's all said and done several years from now, but it's not totally necessary unless you're a garden freak like me who must have her entire property filled with flowers, trees and shrubs. Most are happy with a basic plan that requires minimal maintenance.

Hmm, it might go as high as 25% if you don't have any hardscape at all. That's always the biggest expense, in any region. Otherwise, the usual figure is 10%. Others are right that the West Coast is much, much more expensive than that. In 1989 we bought a small cottage, large urban lot 40x147'. More than half the hardscape was already installed, including a backyard with a small concrete patio, terraced brick retaining wall, and 10x12' well-built roofed shed. An article in the local paper that same year, had a very relevant article on installing a garden and a bit of additional hardscape. The parameters of the landscaping were almost identical to the property we'd just bought. Cost of a moderately priced, "nothing fancy" landscape, all professionally installed, with a simple deck (this was relevant to us because our backyard is so large, we needed to have another deck area in addition to the patio already there) was.... $50,000+ - and remember, this is 1989 prices! The article pointed out that DIY would save tremendously on this cost, PROVIDED the work done was good looking and well planned - not just from a design standpoint, but from a drainage/engineering standpoint as well. Our home cost $180K, which was a stretch for us at the time. So yeah, it took us 12 years and quite a lot of DIY, although we did get some pro help, before we finished landscaping all 5000 sq.ft. of outdoor space. Total cost was somewhere around $15K. We're in a starter neighborhood so things didn't have to be fancy, which was a relief. So even with about 70% DIY and half the hardscape already there, the 10% of value figure was just about correct. Of course, the house is worth a lot more money now, but so is the landscaping!

That is a beautiful and interesting house! I imagine there are local gardeners who would love to give you ideas about landscaping. I second the advice to wander around the area and ask for advice and information from gardeners with landscapes you admire. My favorite source of plants is the ones which do so well that there is an excess of divisions available. That way, there is no doubt that the plant is suited to your climate, if you have a place with similar lighting. I love trading plants and have a back corner spot available for anything I don't know where to place. Then, after I see how it behaves, I can either find a place for it or pass it on to someone else.

I‘ve been trying to get rid of the banana trees but they keep coming back! I know they look messy! I went to lowes to get some plants (juniper bush bush/ sunshine/pink flower perrenials-cant remember name) but they look too small for this driveway now! My neighbor says his son will dig and plant as he is trying to make money for college, I just have to buy the plants. I got a landscape qoute and it was 2k! I just cant afford that right now. Will love some diy ideas!

We paid a landscape architect for a design with a maximum budget for implementation. When he got the estimate for implementing it from the landscaper, it was twice our budget. So yes the estimate was free but the design was not. Not the reworks of the design

We said we had xxx to spend total. I made it clear his cost was part of that. We did get multiple pool estimates and that was within the budget I expected. But he first a designed a large pool when I asked for a spa pool. Why is the correction on me? He added a bunch of boulders and walls we didn't ask for. Now charging me to draw it again without the extra stuff. If he could not help us figure out what we could do on our budget he should have said that at the beginning. Because our ask was what can we do for x. Not design whatever and let's see how much it costs
