Can't remember why I ordered Viking apple
Comments (2)I think Axel was the one getting us interested in Viking. I grafted it a few years ago and hopefully it will fruit next summer. Here is a description I got from him I think: "Viking", you have to grow this one, it's the best apple I've ever tasted, it reminds me of a cross in between a lychee and a rose. But it's a Summer apple, you only need a couple of branches of it because it wants to be eaten close to the tree. Scott...See MoreBeleza vs. Minas - why, oh why can't I decide?
Comments (36)Donna - nope, I haven't yet, and our courtesy hold on our Minas will end in a few days. What to do, what to do... Karlarock - Can you tell me if your stone is oiled in the photos? I really need something that will say, "Hello, I'm a black stone, and only at strange angles and bright sunlight can you see my hidden greens." ;o) Mustbnuts (I love your username, BTW!) - we'll have white beaded inset cabs on the perimeter with *some* variety of soapstone, and carrara marble on the island. Whether the island will be stained or some other paint color (green, perhaps?) is still up for debate. Further complicating things is that I have two very different carrara slabs from which to choose - one very calm one which I have seen in person, and one very veiny one I've only seen in photos. I'm leaning toward the veiny one, but I couldn't have a very veiny Minas in the same kitchen. We got photos of some new Minas slabs this morning which have even fewer white veins than the very quiet ones we have on hold, but it still appears to have a lot of the little white "spots," and I'm not sure I want that. In all of the finished Minas kitchen pictures I've seen, the stone appears solid black with white veins, without all the splotchies. Am I wrong about this? Do you Minas owners have those little spots, and they just aren't apparent in the photos?...See MoreWhy you can't find the perfect color?
Comments (5)Very interesting article, lazy gardens, thanks for posting it. This certainly might explain why I had at least 14 different quarts of green paint when trying to find the perfect shade for our main living areas, and spent days looking for a white----sorting through paint chips and comparing the ratios of pigments, then trying them In the room for morning and afternoon light. Every time I pick a color it's the same thing all over again. Maybe that is why, having finally found the perfect green nine years ago, I am still 100% satisfied and cannot imagine changing it. It may also explain why I patronize the smallest grocery stores I can find. I've always described larger stores as having too much "visual noise," to the utter confusion of DH, who likes the largest grocery store in town. It takes me twice as long to shop there, not only because there are so many choices, but because there is just too much color variation! Especially in the canned tomato aisle, it's really crazy how many shades of red are displayed on the labels! It always sounded crazy.....maybe it's science and genetics :-)...See MoreWhy can't I decide on a vent hood style?
Comments (38)Oh no, no OTR microwave! Unless your kitchen is too small for a separate spot for it, OTR microwaves are very impractical. The venting is poor, they are set up too high, and their use interferes with anyone using the range. Regarding the 8 foot ceilings, you have 96". The vent hood height from the top of the cooktop to the bottom of the hood is specified in the installation instructions from the manufacturer. Let's say that it's 30". So adding the 30" space to the 36" counter top height, you have 66". If the hood is 18" that comes to 84" and you then have 12" left between the top of the hood and the ceiling. That's not enough for a storage cabinet but definitely enough for some sort of decorative top treatment. If the manufacturer specifies more or less than 30" then your space above the hood will increase or decrease. But you need to plan for that as you select your vent hood....See More3katz4me
