Kitchen Colour ideas needed please!
Comments (6)It's a lot of wood in a small space. I can see areas where the varnish has worn off the cabinets, so at this point, they probably need to be sanded and stained. I would see if the stain can be lightened. It's dark even for oak. Deep yellow and terra cotta will make it feel even smaller. I've seen both with oak but am not fond of the combination. I like to cool down very warm colors with blue and green. Keep that floor in mind when you pick paint and countertops. It's got pink undertones. Laminate countertops would be an appropriate choice....See MoreTerra Cotta Block Construction - Need Info
Comments (9)Around here they are called "furring", "fairing" or "faring" blocks. I have no idea where the name comes from. They are hollow fired clay blocks, similar to ICUs. My town had a big brick-making operation at one time, so a lot of clay products are featured in our local housing that are not common in other communities. The blocks are very tough but have some problems. When expose to wet soils for a long time unglazed blocks tend to turn back into their original clay over time. This does not make the good foundation material although they were often used in foundations. However, if glazed, they are exceptional foundation material. The are very hard, but brittle. Standard concrete anchors that rely on friction or pressure don't work reliably. They often crack the blocks. Power loads are absolutely out of the question. Fastening to the blocks is a chore since something like a toggle anchor must be used. I am not aware of any anchor specialized for clay blocks, and believe me I have looked. I pity the guy who has to hang cabinets in your house....See MoreAm I crazy to consider painting over stain grade hickory?
Comments (17)You have three major things here that are making you dislike your kitchen - floors, hickory, and paint. Maybe a fourth - lighting. When cabinets are bad, I am usually the first to say, paint them white. But, your cabinets are so nice, and I personally would not paint them. I love wood floors, and want all my wood floors the same species and stain, so I would definitely want hickory floors in my kitchen. I know this is usually a "no-no" but I truly think with some tweeking in other areas you can make it work. See attached pictures from Houzz. Changing the terra cotta paint will make the biggest impact. Check out the green paint in some of these attached pictures or a neutral linen white (this is coming from someone who doesn't like white walls). Someone mentioned under-cabinet lighting - you probably need that, but hard to tell from the pictures. So, if that were my kitchen, I would intall hickory floors to match the rest of my house, I would paint the walls a lighter color (my accessories would help dictate that color), I would use a really nice kitchen rug to add color of my choice, I would use my bright, happy Fiesta dishes to make me happy. I am not understanding about the island - are you going to use one. If so, perhaps paint it a color (of your choice) to break up the flooring. Don't be afraid of mixing the hickory wood if that is what you want. If you google craftsmen room, you will see cabinets, trim, flooring, doors, etc in the same species and stain and it looks great. It is all in how other color is added. Comments (169)Your kitchen is really beautiful but that is a lot of wood. Whitewash might create more texture but maybe a milk paint or actual paint could lighten up the space and make it a little more country modern. If it were my kitchen I might keep some of the wood and update countertops and maybe the ceilings. It certainly is a beautiful space. Here are some kitchens below that use the wood but add some areas of light or paint. Just ideas that might help think about the space. Here are a few ideas that come to mind. update without paintpainting cabinets never again this one looks like white wash I love the wood but the ceiling and counters help balance the space...See Morejck910
