I'm replacing my siding with hardie plank. our contractor recommends adding some character by doing some vertical board and batten on the second floor. I'm having trouble visualizing this. is there an exterior app that would be helpful? I'm keeping the black shutters, black doors, cobblestone, and staying with a similar taupe color exterior. I'm going with hardie Monterey taupe. I like the look of crisp white window, door, and roof trim. I'm thinking of black gutters and drain spouts for some contrast. I like the idea of board and batten accents but am just having trouble visualizing it.

libby_landry101 - If I suggested anything, I would consider widening the new siding boards. No B&B. You do not need another type of material on your home. It's beautiful the way it is!

Black guttering and downspouts would look fine, but be aware that they may make the two-story wing look more narrow.

Nice stone work. Skip the third material; it will detract from the traditional design of the house.

If the roof is vented with ridge and eave vents, you can eliminate the wall vent at the apex of the gable.

The downspouts are fine the way they are.

You might consider light warm gray trim.

https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer#/active You can DIY with this tool or book a consultation and have their techs do it for you. The learning curve is not too difficult. I got it after about 30 minutes of trial and error. Here is my Before and After. I admit that I incorporated Cut & Paste from MS Paint to get the final result.

great tip. thank you! I have been really struggling with the B&B so I'm glad both of you don't recommend it. I was afraid it would look too busy. thank you so much for adding in the black downspouts!!! I hate it lol. you're right, it looks so narrow. would you suggest white if I'm doing white trim or the color of the siding like they are now? would you suggest white or black gutters?

the siding is in rough shape. it may not look too bad from the photos but it's over 30 years old and is showing major wear. the side of the house tends to be a wind channel and the siding is buckling, routinely blows loose, and a piece or two has blown off and my husband has to keep tacking it down. it's aluminum so its getting creases from damage. it's also very faded in spots since the house is full sun.

I would keep the guttering and downspout the same color. Which color is up to you! You may have trouble getting an exact match to your siding. Are you going back with aluminum?

Downspouts aren’t a feature to emphasize... and as others have said you don’t need a third material.

I signed my siding contract today! thank you for all of the advice. i took it all. if I can ask another question. Do you think it would look good if I painted the gray cement slabs at both entrances black?
