Idea for scribe trim (not fill) pieces on Ikea Bodbyn white cabinets

I have a big ugly gap (1/4 - 3/8") between all my cabinets and the walls. I posted about this yesterday but situation now is that I either have to pay $$ to get new side panels cut to fit wall, or put some kind of trim - they called it scribe trim - to cover tha caulk/gap. My cabinets are Bodbyn white. Problems with trim idea that I'm wondering if people have ideas about.....

1) Ikea doesn't seem to make any trim suitable for this. We'd have to either get trim and paint too match (seems tricky to match color and especially smooth finish) or see if installer can take a panel and cut a really long, thin (1/4" thin, 40" long) piece to be the trim piece and attach without weird gapping.

2) My side panels don't have horizontal trim at bottom so I'd have a panel with trim going down the back but both just tapering off at the bottom. I don't think I can install deco trim pieces around the bottom for a finished look without a major project because I already had them cut panels to install on cabinet bottoms.

I just wanted to say....whenever I post questions (which is alot lately), I get alot of helpful responses and I really appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi cv2014, I still love the look of our Semihandmade walnut, to me it's very warm. We briefly looked into having Semihandmade make panels for the side and the back of the island, but we wanted a more substantial edge and it just seemed like we'd have better luck getting it to all work out if we hired a finish carpenter to do the job. We're very happy with how it turned out. You can go to almost any good lumber store and purchase a full sheet of walnut veneer for not a lot of $$s. Depending on where it's used, it could be ok if it doesn't match perfectly with the Semihandmade walnut. The corner cabinet has a filler piece, I think it was around 4 inches, that gives enough clearance so that the cabinet door can open without worrying about having it hit the door to the right. In my case I think I was also concerned about clearance so it wouldn't hit the oven handle as well. That was solved by making the pull-out next to the over slightly wider than originally planned. These are the older Ikea cabinet style, so I'm not sure if the new style has the same kind of corner cabinet or not. Good luck with your planning!

We're planning on using the Bodbyn doors, so I don't think cutting them will be nearly as easy. I think that if we decide to go the route that requires a door modification we would just order from semihandmade and get everything made to the size we need. We don't have someone coming out to measure and finalize design until April, so we have some time to think on it. In store, they wanted me to use all 30 inch cabinets, so I don't want to have to rely 100% on their input. With the 30 inch cabinets, I'll have an 11 inch gap. It seems weird to me to take out our ugly soffit just to essentially put another one in. If we do go the 80 inch cabinet route, will it look ok to have the big gap there and not on the other cabinets? What do you think about the 30 vs 40 sizing?

I deleted my comment, toyed around with it in IKEA's website and realized that if I moved the stove to the fridge wall I'd have to get rid of my lower cabinet and add 2 12's.... Not nearly as functional. There would be a plus to being able to see into the living room, but the negative is that I would always be in the way when I'm cooking. Our fridge can't go into the corner because of our heater, even beside the window is out because of that. I think I'm just going to be stuck with some filler pieces. At the end of the day, it'll be 1000x more functional than it is now. I do think that I'm going to move the microwave beside the fridge, and put a nice hood over my range. Will just have to adjust the height of my cabinets on the basement wall. ETA: Weird question... if I use 20 inch cabinets above the microwave, can I line up the bottom of that cabinet with the bottom of the fridge cabinet and have them at different heights? I can't find a taller fridge cabinet.... is there one? Kitchen with hood

We are just finishing up an Ikea kitchen install. We have cabinets going up to our refrigerator panel, which is about 26 inches deep. We put just over and inch of filler between the upper cabinet and the panel, and could have used more. It was a challenge to figure out how much filler we needed; it depended on the width of the upper cabinet door and the position and depth of the cabinet knob. For our pantry, the cabinets with drawers behind a door the Ikea planner specifies hinges that open wider than the regular ones (153 degrees vs 125 degrees). The door needs to open wider to allow the drawers to extend. So, yes, you might need filler between the 21 inch cabinet and the oven, unless you changed the cabinet door to hinge on the other side. I agree with Bubblyjock, to try and go spend some time in Ikea looking at installs. I spent time looking at exactly how the hinges work and how they installed cabinets next to appliances and walls, etc. I also had a free design appointment and they were a great help with calculating filler pieces and cover panels. I loved using the planner to do my kitchen and I made many changes before we finally installed everything. But I also posted my floorplan here and got some great help and feedback and ended up using a layout I had not even considered initially. You have a similar amount of space as I do (our kitchen is 13.5x17), and I think you have enough room to not have your fridge in the corner and your dishwasher between your sink and cooktop. I think both of those things would bother me.

Seems like adding trim could draw your eye more but hard to know without seeing photos for context. How many panels are there? What about replacing the upper panels which are at eye level and ignoring the lowers? You will not be able to make scribe from end panels/ ikea is made from dust and glue and will disintegrates hen cut into small strips.

Get matching paint and paint the calking to blend in if you cannot fit a scribe molding there. Put the scribe on the wall instead of the cabinet with a reduced edge forward and nobody will pay attention.

I'm thinking maybe a small 1/2" x 3/4" rectangular parting stop may work.

@mh smith People used Soft Wool # (24-1B) from Valspar paint, they said the paint is a perfect match to Ikea Bodbyn While, grab a sample and match it-up.

What color is the rest of the trim in your kitchen? You could use that color instead of trying to match the cabs

In these situations (which i have faced may times) I will scribe and cut a stock IKEA Forbattra cover panel. Contrary to Hallett and Co's advice, the integrity of these panels is such that they can stand up to thin strips being cut from them.

Home Reborn really? I'm not trying to contradict you but when I rip panels down the drop just sort of... falls apart. I was just trying to set up realistic expectations for the op so they don't spend $$ on a cover panel to rip down to a strip and destroy it. If you have had success great!

I'll second what Home Reborn said - we have thin strips (thinner than I would think the OP would want to use) that we ripped down to fill in around our microwave and under the apron on the sink. No issues. We did tape the bejesus out of the cut line to minimize chipping, but no problems.

Let's not make an elephant out of a fly, it's a simple fix and there is no need to rip a panel to a 1/4" strip *cough*.
