I would say no wider than the black FP surround. With art, no wider than the firebox opening is a good rule, but a TV that small wouldn't be acceptable to most people. Most people follow this guideline and keep TV away from a heat source.

It's going to look out of place regardless. It will end up being the focal point rather than the fireplace so may as well go bigger. Do you know how you will handle the wires?

I would go smaller. It's going to look off if the TV is larger than the firebox below - too top heavy.

Chose your TV size the same way you would if you were putting art up there.

And also, be prepared for the cognoscenti here to show up and berate you for putting your tv up there. You will hear it will wreck your neck, your tv will explode from the heat, and people will walk into your house and scream in horror. Yes it doesn't matter that multiple other people here can disprove all of those statements....you will still get sniffed at in derision. :)

@vinmarks So our mantel Is hollow and will house the box and cords! And we are getting the Samsung frame tv that you can display art on when the tv is not in use.

@User Thanks for the warning 😂. There is actually no other place in the living Room it can go. We have an ocean view with lots of windows so this is really the only place!

scb481. Nice! I saw the cords coming out the side and wondered what you would do with them. And just for the record I have no problem with tv's over fireplaces. We had one over our fireplace in our previous house. For us it's more about function over form. We enjoy our tv time and would put up the biggest tv we could within reason.

scb481 if you have an ocean view don't worry about the tv. No one will notice it. They will be too busy looking at the ocean.
