Any ideas for enhancing the curb appeal of my house?

Hi everyone,

This picture shows the side and back of my house, but it's actually what people see when they pull down the driveway. (The front is visible from a side street.) I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for enhancing the "curb appeal" of the part of the house that's visible from the driveway? There are typically flowers that come up in the garden that goes around the house, but I feel like the larger bushes look out of place.

We need to know where you are in order to make suggestions. Yes, those larger plants are too close to the house. Do you know what they are?

Cute house! Yes, whatever those ragged-looking bushes are, right up against the house, they’re too too close. Remove.

Do I see some hibiscus in the bed? They’re nice for a couple of weeks in late summer, but they’re a waste of garden space for 50 weeks of the year, IMO.

Your house is charming! I was harping about hardscape in the other curb appeal thread and I am going to do it here as well. When people put in a sidewalk, the tendency is to do the bare minimum. I am going to suggest that you work with the concrete company to add some features that will really enhance the curb appeal of your house. Some of the things you can do are to add a generous landing at the bottom of the stairs, make the sidewalk wider and more substantial and make the path from the driveway a graceful curve instead of the usual angular "L" shape.

Thank you. The tree is a nice touch, although I'm not able to plant anything large in that space due to underground restrictions. It's an interesting idea to round columns, but that's more than I'm willing to do right now. I'm keeping my options as pain white, paint dark, or add veneer and stain. Very cool house! Your view of course and location is worth the effort of painting. To enhance the architecture of the house, paint the house and trim the same color. I would suggest a fairly dark slate blue. Then the shape of the house would be unified and nestled into the landscape as it was originally designed to do. The contrast with your reddish roof would be nice. A nice extra large entrance "waterhog" mat at your front door in a dark blue to cover the concrete in front of the door would be useful. Your front door could go brick red, or navy blue. You could have one bench or chair to the right of your door. Keep your landscaping simple around the front door. Maybe a water feature or bird bath with day lilies around it or some other easy perennial. Line your walkway with low growing plants and keep them uniform. You could scatter some pots around the back with flowers of your choice.

I would paint the yellow beige a nice charcoal gray, replace the windows with something cleaner and simpler, and get a new garage door.

I agree with the others that you need to remove the shrubs that are too close to the house. You should have at least a foot of space between plants (at their mature size!) and the wall. More distance would be better if your climate is rainy and humid.

"Foundation planting" is only necessary if you have something to hide, like an ugly foundation. Tall plants planted too close can make a house look untidy and neglected. Stick with low-growing, spreading shrubs, perennials and bulbs.

I would recommend removing the overgrown shurbs/trees, and taking another photo of the house.
