Landscaping New Build: Getting Started

Jacqueline

Hoping we could get some help and insight as this is our first home and we don't know where to begin!

We own a new build with no landscaping at all. With covid we weren't able to save up as much as we wanted to get the deck going this year but the weeds have grown to be quite unruly. And now that the snow is gone the grading is off and there's standing water where the dirt is no longer level.

I'm hoping to get some advice as to what would be the best thing to do to maintain our yard if are aren't ready to commit to full landscaping just yet.

There are some new builds going up around us, should we ask one of them to just regrade our land? Will this help with the weeding situation? Is that something that I can even ask them to do? We called last year many companies to see if they could do this for us but it was quite costly because they would have to haul the equipment out there. We were thinking that if one of the new builds would already have the equipment out there then it wouldn't cost as much.

Should we just use some kind of weed killing chemical? What is safe to use? And then rake the dirt to try to level it ourselves? We have a lot of land so this would take a lot of work.

Should we just get sod only? The problem is we would like to do inground sprinkler system and both back and front yard landscaping so would this option end up costing us more in the long run?

Truly newbies and hoping to get any advice on how to maintain without fully committing to landscaping as we have not even had time to think of what kind of design we want and really want to think everything through.

Thanks in advance for any help!
