Need some ideas for my 1950's bathroom restore
Comments (30)The leaks didn't come from the shower head/ faucet side but on the opposite end, which is an outside wall. The water was dripping directly underneath down the basement wall. I've scoped out a couple of pro tile installation/repair companies and will have them come in to check it out and provide estimates to clean the floor and repair the shower. Finally got up to the attic to get the spare tile. Fortunately, I've got about 70 brand new wall tiles which the original owner had left behind. Gathering dust for over half a century but am glad to have them!...See More1950s Bathroom Face Lift
Comments (2)Your picture rotated right side up. Do you prefer to stay with light, neutral colors or are you looking for something darker? You could paint the vanity espresso and use shiny chrome hardware or repaint a fresh off-white and use oil-rubbed bronze or satin nickel hardware. It depends on your preference. My powder room has travertine floors, BM Baby Turtle walls, a mahogany vanity and ORB fixtures. Very warm and cozy. My guest bath has travertine floors, shiny chrome fixtures and hardware, a cherry type stained vanity, white subway tiled shower, and pale BM Old Prairie walls. It's very bright and spa like, but the stained vanity and ivory floors offer some warmth. Both are very different looks. Pottery Barn has some nice light fixtures - I just installed the Sussex tube sconces and they're very pretty. Paint and new floors alone can make a big difference but a new faucet is another low cost fix that will have an impact. You could also frame your large mirror with wood to match the vanity. If you search the web, you'll find DIY instructions. Good luck!...See MorePink and maroon 1950s bathroom
Comments (53)OMG. This is the color of my bathroom as well! And it's been very difficult finding pictures of other bathrooms with the same scheme. (The reverse -- pink with maroon trim -- is easy. But maroon with pink seems much less common.) The towel bars, toothbrush holder, etc. are all pink. The previous owners covered all the tile with white paint and I can't decide whether to strip it off or not. I'd like the room to be original but it's only 5'x7' and I'm worried it will be too dark and oppressive. For a few days I was sure I was going to strip it off, but the stripper I used on a test portion wasn't very effective, so now I don't know if I want to bother. And of course I don't know the condition of the tiles and fixtures under the paint. Unfortunately the original floor tiles -- which were very cool -- are already gone....See More1950s bathroom help
Comments (2)I'm not a designer or anything, but I personally think it's adorable. For resale, you might find out that you have a lot of other little projects to do around the house, so maybe put this one lower down in the priority list. If re-grouting is needed, do that. Then for resale, make sure it's super clean, buy new bathmats, fluffy white towels, and hang a pretty shower curtain, maybe a white one with some style to it like tassels at the bottom or a subtle tone-on-tone white, or pick up on one color other than white in the room. Adding some wall art above the towel bar and toilet would be nice too. Editting to add: If you want to do something related to the tile, I think it's less expensive to change the floor tile rather than the tub/shower surround because you don't have to re-do the waterproofing. You could install a calmer floor tile that looks good with the current peach and blue. The shower looks cute IMO, and it will be covered up or framed with a shower curtain anyway....See MoreRobin Rosenberg
