Remodeling Design Dilemma Fireplaces

How should we finish our double sided fireplace? See pic

We’re in the middle of having a remodel done. We made the fireplace double sided. This side that we opened up will be to the sitting room. As you can see the new layer of brick that was added on this side sits flush with the sheet rock. Should we add a full mantle to give depth from the wall? And should we add trim above the mantle to the ceiling? Thanks

Wouldn’t trim above the mantle cover what you just added? I think I’d add a full mantle. What about a cement / concrete surround?

You don't need any trim. You can either have the fireplace without a mantle, or if you want one, use a wide one like the current one but cut to fit just to the edges of the brick. I think some depth with a mantle is nice since you have the raised hearth. Or, if you are placing a tv to the right or left of the fireplace, you can design the mantle to incorporate it with some sort of built in unit around the tv.

I completely agree with you, jerzeegirl. Isn't the whole point of a backsplash to protect the wall behind the countertops? I think it would look even siller to have that much counter hanging out there past the cabinets and backsplash. But I also do think it isn't very good design to have the top and bottom cabinets not line up when all you have is a stretch of wall on the other side or some other feature that acts as a natural stopping point. So I like the idea of adding shelves to the end of the top row of cabinets. Then there is no question about where to end the tile.

I was going to suggest the same thing that groveraxle seems to have suggested - eliminate the stone on the side walls. The stone appears to be thin veneer that is likely glued in place. Instead of painting I might suggest using a German smear technique similar to the photo posted below.

This is a close up of a tweedy type rug that might work for you - I just think a darker rug will cozy up the area and complement the ottoman so much better.... This rug has been discontinued and the remaining sizes are probably too big for your space, but it might be a direction to be looking, if it appeals to you: Something like this might work, too. Have you considered this instead? - easier and looks great. Armstrong Plank Ceiling Had a different situation years ago (o.k. about 26 years ago) and put this ceiling up. I have a friend who now owns my previous home and the ceiling is still there and going strong. I like pine, but frankly, it's tough to paint and have look like anything. It's great natural on walls and if it's the look you're going for, o.k. on the ceiling. But in your situation, I'd personally go with this plank ceiling. Save yourself a LOT of time and money and in my opinion, get far superior results :)

I'm confused about what you mean by "full mantel" -- something different from what's shown in the photo?

I mean a full mantle all the way around. My wife doesn’t want to cover the brick above the mantle but should we put trim along where the sheet rock is flush with brick? Similar mantle to this pic but not covering the brick above the mantle. We would not cover the brick hearth either.

No "full mantel". It looks more updated to have just the brick flush with the drywall.

Would begin by using a wire brush or sander to remove the excess concrete on the exposed brick.

Is this a wood burning fireplace? Gas, Electric?

Consider creating "built-in" cabinets with shelving on both sides of it. The built-ins don't need to be custom built -- just find the closest possible width fit cabinet, center it and cover any spaces on each side of each cabinet with a trim board painted the same color as the cabinet.

Have the depth of the cabinet no deeper than the hearth.

Rather than the "traditional" fireplace mantel and its wood support, consider a more modern metal frame with doors.
