I love windchimes. Well some windchimes. I like the deep rich gong tones. Do not like high pitched tinkling ones or wooden ones or shells etc.

I do like them. I have a Corinthian set that has mid-tones hanging outside my back door. I'm listening to them now. It's soothing. I checked with my neighbors to make sure they didn't mind. I had some that were bamboo and my neighbor on the other side has a set of them now and I don't care for them. I also have a glass set but in having it outside, one of the bars broke. I still haven't gotten around to gluing it back together so it's in the house. I don't think it's suitable for outside but I do love it.

I hate them. Just noise. So annoying. Someone gave us some recently and DH hung them on the far barn. He hears them when he is back there but I would throw them in the trash.

No, I don't care for them. I'm not overly annoyed if at someone's home where they are installed, but I don't want them here or next door. I'm content when outside to listen to the sound of wind itself, birds, other neighborhood noises. I don't even think to play music when outside, not even if we are entertaining. I've had neighbors who had windchimes. I don't have anyone now close enough for me to know, but do only very occasionally hear a waft of classical music from next door. It's not at all intrusive. I should add we are close to the beach, so it may be too windy for the 'gentle' sound of chimes.

A park several blocks below us was having free live concerts year before last, on Saturday afternoons. Very little of it to my taste and loudly coming up through the trees to us. None last year during the restrictions.

I enjoy the deeper sounds from Corinthian chimes. I have one on the porch, and in high winds it boinks against a pillar. When weather is coming, I use a small bungee to tie the chimes together so there's no clanging.

My closest neighbor is not very friendly, but has dogs who bark. When I moved in, I asked if she minded chimes and she said she didn't care for them. So my proposal to her was I'd be mindful of the noise of my chimes if she'd be mindful of the noise of her dogs. Six years later, no problems expressed on either side.

Fortunately we live far enough away from others that no neighbors can hear them...only us.

The ones I have are tuned, not random, and they make a lovely harmonious sound. I often meditate to them.

I like them, but I don't think I would have them in Cathedral City, where it tends to be windier than where I live in Los Angeles. We have some that are brass and have a very soft, mellow sound. They are not loud at all - and cannot be heard by the neighbors next door. I used to have some bamboo ones that I bought in Hawaii that were even quieter, but they wore out.

Inside the house, we have a set of crystal singing bowls, which we use for sound baths. We had our first sound bath at The Integraton near Landers, just north of Palm Springs. After the sound bath, I felt no pain from my arthritis, and it did not come back for at least a week.

I love mine, but have had to move it. We had it hanging in front of the kitchen window but it gets the brunt of the wind here, so we moved it in front of the living room window. Well....while I love the sound of the chimes, after a while it grates on my nerves......... I moved it between the bedroom windows and there is a big lilac tree on either side of it so it chimes a lot less now. I need a happy medium spot to put it.

I enjoy all of my wind chimes when there is a gentle breeze, but not the clanging and banging when we have the strong winds that we've been having lately.

I don't like them, but most random sound bothers me, even more as I get older.

No, I hate them. Ded tired, I completely agree with you. My neighbor has chimes that are about 4 feet long and are so annoying. I live in Oklahoma and it is breezy or windy here 360 days a year! Yesterday we had 39 mph gusts. In spring and fall when I want to sleep with our bedroom window open those chimes make noise all night long. If a person wants chimes they need to be considerate of their neighbors and muffle them when they are not outside listening to them.

I like them if mellow and deep. I don't like bamboo ones. They make me think of bones hitting bones. I am way out in the country on 2.5 acres so I don't think the chimes are too loud. Mine are old and need a new wood piece but DH is not a fan, so probably never get fixed.

What really drives me crazy is outdoor speakers and music I don't like played too loud. Also hate live bands and DJ's that some of neighbors have done at parties.

Thank you, Socks. I have been looking for one. Last years wasps made a home in the tubes of a chime I had. Also the wood part of it rotted. I just ordered one that is all metal with no tubes.

caflowerluver, when I lived in Venice, the neighbor behind me (an old German man) has his back yard facing my back yard, as my lot when from the street in the front to the street in the back. Anyway, when he moved in, he put up speakers on the back of his house that were directed toward my back yard and would play fairly loud music from his old turntable. Sometimes it was German umpah bands, and sometimes it was an old Perry Como record that would get stuck. I was very upset that he focused his speakers onto my back yard, even though his back yard was across the street from my back yard. A stuck Perry Como record made it very unpleasant in my own back yard.

The next door neighbors we had in Venice had parties almost every week-end, but at least they invited us, and I would go, but Kevin preferred to try to sleep, which was difficult, since his bedroom was next to the house that had the most parties. During the summer, we liked to have our windows open (we did not have or need A/C), and this was somewhat difficult with noisy neighbors. The neighbors next to my bedroom sometimes had girlfriends who were quite loud in bed around 3 AM. I would have to close my windows when that happened. Screaming children would have been worse, however, as that is the sound that I hate most.

Someone up the street has chimes that I sometimes hear when I walk by. I love those chimes so much that I have imagined knocking on their door to tell them so. But that would be weird, and I've learned from KT that many people don't answer their door anyway.

Dogs barking and children loudly being children rarely bother me. Fingernails on a chalk board? No problem. Helicopter noises bother me when they circle and circle, as they do here far too frequently.

No opinion on the chimes. Don't hate em, don't like them enough to get any. I think my one neighbor has some, but her house is far enough away from mine that I do not hear them. My mom used to like them, but has entered a phase where her and my father are tossing absolutely every non essential item in their home, including the chimes.

I can think of lots and lots of noises that are irritating to me. Wind chimes are not one.

Annie, we have the exact same chimes. Only have at our home in mountains. Love the soothing sound. We have 40 acres so no neighbors close. Too breezy to have one here on the beach.

I think what would drive me nuts though would be an aeolian harp as they sound so eerie. But you need a consistently windy place for them to work.

Good thing I don’t live near many of you! We got this chime last spring, mostly for the color. The tinkling is an added benefit, IMO.

If you want to capture the wind, you can do it silently...I have my Lyman Whitaker kinetic sculpture which is also a great meditation point.

Like Katlan, I like deep, rich, perfectly tuned wind chimes. These tend to be expensive, which explains why I don't have any. :-)

Anne - when I played that video my dog, who had been asleep, woke up and looked around. She usually sleeps through everything.

Lars - that is the reason we moved out to the country to 2.5 acres. We wanted peace and quiet and to listen to the sounds of nature. But you can't escape people, especially inconsiderate people with outdoor speakers.

I love the deep toned, tuned chimes. Higher pitched ones, not so much. I also like some of the smaller ones that kind of 'tinkle', the glass or ceramic, even some light metal ones. They can sound so light-hearted and fun. I love the one you pictured, nhbaskets!

I like them, I have a couple here but in areas that don't get a lot of wind. My neighbors aren't close enough to hear them. I have tinnitus really bad and the sound of the chimes is a wonderful way to drown it somewhat. I lost my bigger ones that I really liked.

I love wind sculptures! I have a small colorful one in my bulb flower bed. I would love to have more.

I have a set of Corinthian bells, that I love. I have asked my closest neighbor if they bother her, and she replied that she rarely hears that.

NHbasket, your chimes (the shells) always make me think of growing up in San Pedro CA as a child. My mom had a friend who had those, although, not multi colored, in her kitchen entryway, hanging like curtains.

They are fine to hear *temporarily*. I don't want to listen to them constantly and think they might need to be regulated like light pollution in residential areas.

I love wind chimes, and enjoy two different types when I'm in my backyard. One is Corinthian chimes I believe, as they are low pitched and very soothing. The other has a higher pitch, but is not glassy or tinkly like ice cream truck chimes, it has a beautiful sound, like Westminster chimes, but I'm not certain. They are only hung during the summer, but I love hearing them when I'm gardening or out on the patio.

I don't think I've ever heard them chime at the same time, as one is hung within a dense tree and it has to be windier to move the chimes. The other is hung from a bottom branch of an airier tree, that catches wind more easily. They are hung from trees further back on the property, so more of a background sound if I'm on my patio, and not overpowering at all. I can still hear birds chattering and singing. If either of my neighbours ever decide to move, I plan to ask them to sell me their windchimes, lol.

I like wind chimes. I like the somewhat deeper tones as opposed to little high pitched tinkles. I have a set on my deck out back. The only neighbor that can hear them would be the Nature Conservancy. And no humans live there.

Neighbors are more apt to hear my roosters. (They tell me they like hearing them.)

Our neighbors had a rooster...but they got rid of him...*they* couldn't stand the crowing.

Years ago in an apartment complex a neighbor had some on her porch. They drove my husband nuts. Our bedroom window was about 25 feet from them. He taped a few nice notes, anonymously to their door but they didn't take them down. After a month my husband mentioned it was anonymously donated to the dumpster.

My step-aunt, who died a bit over 18 years ago, had three horses hung in the arch between the dining and living rooms. Step-uncle, formerly a beef farmer, had some cattle in the barn, and having had three hip replacements resulting in some difficulties of navigation, I, concerned lest he be stuck in a snowbank, spent a couple of months with him till his cattle went to pasture.

A couple of years later, following his death, I checked the place frequently, often sleeping here, and sixteen years ago, when the farm was sold, the new owner offered to rent the house to me.

If I touch the hangers, the horses give a pleasing, melodious sound.

I've tried blowing on them, but it only works when I become a blowhard.

So, expending slight effort, I've enjoyed them when it suits me for quite a few years.
