Hi there :) Glad to know you've already purchased some nice trees, etc. and looking to do even more. Here are just a few pointers for you to keep in mind as you continue:

1. Ensure you look into how big each of them are expected to grow. I find many folks who place them too close together, or too close to the house.

2. Understand how deep the roots go/spread as well as how much water each is expected to take from the soil. You don't want one taking up all the nutrients, etc from another nearby!

3. Take into consideration the orientation of your house (north, east, etc) and anticipate where it would be helpful to have shade vs. not. Ponder the benefits of each to further plan the use of your land: Do you want an outdoor gathering space of some sort, or a garden, solar, etc? Taking this into account will also help you with placement. And take a look through all of your windows - are there certain sightlines you'd like to keep open, or cover up? And where does the wind travel from most often? Ensure your plants are placed in the most favorable spots so they have a good chance to grow strong :) Also, if areas of your land have seasonal streams, etc - it's all helpful to keep in mind as you select additional plants, trees and placements of same.

4. Lastly, I recommend purchasing more native plants to place in such a way that they will support your local environment and wildlife. You have such a lovely plot, that it would be mighty beneficial to further utilize it to support your surroundings. Ponder expanding your existing ideas further into a 7-tiered food forest, or incorporate a wildlife garden! Seek to encourage typical pollinators to your land, as well as birds/squirrels/deer who also help the area flourish. Seek to create cover, nesting opportunities, native berries, a water source - and you'll be all set!

I hope these ideas and questions help you brainstorm a great design for your land :)

The main concepts to stay mindful of is to minimize the amount of 'lawn' you now have since removing the holly, etc and to instead create an enticing atmosphere that can bring you bliss during each and every season. Keep those reminders nearby and it'll propel you forward with every step.

Oh, and I'd also suggest herbs like lavender, or a large lilac bush (or similar) near your door or along your front walkway. That sort of entrance will be most memorable and will welcome you home each day!

The crabapple might fit planted at the edge of the left side bed. The birch, maple and magnolia should not be planted in the existing foot print of the foundation beds. All are small to large trees, not foundation plants.

A zone and location will be needed for plant suggestions for the beds against the house. Do you have a look or style you prefer? Are you trying to get away from the sheared meatball theme you currently have?

I’m in zone 6b. I prefer a more airy and organic look and not so formal. I’m not opposed to extending the beds to accommodate larger plantings.

It looks like you have some consistency in your current plantings. You've bought two ornamental trees; japanese maple and jane magnolia, that should stand on their own. Meaning they should not be next to each other because they each are stars.

Personally, I would have bought two japanese maples and put one on the right and one on the left of the house. However, this would all depend upon what all the other plantings look like in the warmer months.

I should’ve clarified, the magnolia jane I purchased is a smaller bush form and not the magnolia Jane tree. It will stay more compact.

Magnolia 'Jane' is Magnolia 'Jane'. There is no smaller bush form. 'Jane' can grow to 25' high x 20' wide.

Ok. Any suggestions for plantings?

Your picture showing the entire front is excellent for the big picture. Now we need some closeups of the beds, front walk and entry to see what kind of space there is to work with. Zone 6b where? City and state is good. Your ecoregion matters almost more than zone for appropriate plant suggestions. What direction does the house face?

Actually there is :-) Multi-trunked forms - like the OP's photo - tend to stay very compact and shrub-like. And this is the most common form they are presented in for sale. And it would be rare for even a single trunked tree form specimen to reach 25'! Neither of the parent species are inclined to grow that large.

Thank you Gardengal. Yes I was told at a local nursery that the bush is smaller and suitable for close to the house landscaping. The holly bushes in question are enormous as they are over 30 years old. We have lopped them off to almost nothing repeatedly and they grow back up over the roofline. They gotta go! I am not opposed to some compact holly shrubs sprinkled in. For region reference I‘m in Central Kentucky.

The Missouri Botanical Garden does not seem to agree with that assessment. At this point I'm not seeing room in what looks like typical undersized foundation beds for a 'Jane' no matter what size bush it grows to. No trimming of magnolia remember.

Perhaps gardengal will come back and tell us how small these multi-trunk, compact, shrub-like (meaning not a shrub) 'Jane' get and whether she would plant one in this bed. I wouldn't.

If you have much land around, a group of River Birch could be nice at some distance from the house.

IMO a landscape design is needed. Either the nursery should be able to help, or they might know someone who can assist.

I like 'Jane'. I have a tree form 'Jane' in my garden that will be blooming in a month. You might have room in the far left bed that has the curve out on the house corner that I have not seen up close yet. There is not enough room for 'Jane' in the rest of the foundation beds.

You might not want to hear this. I want to rip out the front walkway and redo the whole front entry. You have a substantial home on a sizeable lot with a tiny narrow walk and skinny beds that are not going to work for the quite nice plants you have bought so far. They deserve better.

Simply replacing the existing bushes in the beds as they are is not going to give you much of a makeover. The best you could hope for with new plant choices is less pruning and a softer look.
