Here are some of her inspiration pictures. I think she liked the old house look of the color on the trim and was happy with it before the cabinets came, but was drawn to the darker green cabinets she was seeing in a lot of contemporary houses.

This last one in particular was what she was going for with trim.

I am not a pro. I don't think it looks too bad but a picture from farther away would help.

I love both of those shades of green! Is the trim in the rest of the house the same color? Or other kitchen windows? I think as long as it's not a one-off, the colors work. It looks like a charming room. And the idea of light walls and painted trim is in style right now, but I also think it goes with an older home.

I absolute love it. I love both individual colors but I especially love the tone on tone look of the together. Great job!

Thanks! All the trim in the kitchen is painted that color (Behr Jungle camouflage), except the window above the sink (upper cabinets will be white when they're finished). The rest of the house has unpainted dark stained wood but the kitchen was painted already. The house was built in 1895.

Yes! I absolutely love it! You have great style. It reminds me of one of my favorite designers, Lauren Liess. What material is that flooring? I looks kinda cool in the pictures. But green is my favorite color so maybe that's why. :)

It's old vinyl, but it's discolored from years of (probably) wax. Covering it seems like a better option than trying to make it look presentable.

I don't see the tonal trim/cabinet look in the inspiration pics but I like the idea a lot and think yours look lovely! She's probably just over-thinking a big change, happens all the time. Best of luck with your renos :)

@comelyhomely Yes, none of those pictures have different colors on trim and cabinets, but she just liked a different look for each. She makes these decisions and then immediately hates them, but they often grow on her. It's good to hear others saying it's not a total disaster.

I love the greens you chose; I think it works! And yes, the floor is very intriguing...looks a bit like vintage linoleum.
I do agree that the cabinet hardware is more modern than the look you seem to be going for.

The more I look at your photos, the more I like them. If this is your wife's style, I think she has a great eye. I just love the choices, the traditional-looking art on the walls, etc. I am actually impressed and inspired by the colors. What a beautiful departure from current (waning) trends that are usually seen here. Congrats to her.

ON my screen it looks gray not green. So I don't like that look. But I do like the look of a greener gray cabinet and lighter trim. It's a good contrast.

I tried to write you back Quentin but it didn't post. not sure why! I would suggest more rounded off cabinet pulls like your insp pic with the basket in the corner :)

@Fori and @chinacatpeekin The floor feels like linoleum, and has been waxed like linoleum, but I didn't think linoleum was generally in tiles, but in sheets. Nothing we've tried has been successful in cleaning the layers of wax and it would probably need a professional cleaning if we were to keep it.

@Mrs. S Thanks for your kind words! Yes, the colors and decorating are all my wife's work. She loves old houses and older styles. I can't see well and am terrible with colors so I gladly leave all of that up to her. She works really hard despite our small budget so it's encouraging to hear it looks good.

@heathermalia Thanks! The pulls were free, so maybe we will change them out eventually. These were leftover from a house my father in law was building so we used them.

I'm going to be the outlier here and say that I think they're too close. I love both shades, and love the idea of using a lighter version of the cabinets for the trim, but I'd use a *much* lighter version of the trim. That way, they coordinate without looking off.

The floor probably needs to be chemically stripped to restore it which would be a nasty job, but not as nasty as removing it--betcha there's asbestos under it. :)

I like it. It is refreshing to see trim painted something other than white. The greens suit your style of furniture and art.

You say the house is vintage 1895. What style is it?

The trim looks good. I would have preferred it to be exact color of those lower cabinets, but, it looks good, so I would not redo it. You are saying you are going to cover over the floor. You will have to remove the baseboards, before you can do that, so that will all have to be sanded and repainted, once they are installed back on the wall. I also like seeing trim, that isnt all white.

@Carrie B My wife also thinks the trim has more yellow undertones and the cabinets more blueish undertones so it's not necessarily just the lighter/darker difference. I really have no idea.

@Fori I think our best option at this point is to cover it. There's a thick layer of black adhesive underneath (could also be asbestos) and another layer of vinyl before the subfloor. If the top layer itself doesn't contain asbestos no doubt it's somewhere in one of those layers. Because it's already so high vinyl seems to be our only option.

@JudyG The rest of the house has original unpainted, dark stained woodwork and deep windowsills. It's a city house so there's really nothing fancy. It was last decorated sometime in the 60s-70s so that's mostly what we've been dealing with in remodeling.

@cat_ky Thanks! We're planning to just use vinyl (sheet or tile) since there are already so many layers on the floor and because of the radiators. We thought we could get away with just removing the shoe molding for that. We've also toyed with the idea of painting it (checkerboard pattern), but that might be too big of a project (still have to clean it) and it may be better just to have a new, clean and more durable surface.

I think we'll end up with a grey and cream large checkerboard pattern, perhaps this look.

Have you looked at Marmoleum? I have no direct experience with it, but I have a friend who used it in her ‘20s home, and it looks great.

Yes! We haven't yet decided what we'll go with, but we like that a lot. Honestly, I know it's not very popular right now, but on floors vinyl and linoleum type products are much, much more comfortable than ceramic or porcelain (and don't crack if things are dropped or banged - we have a toddler).

I agree, covering is a much better option than painting it. The paint may not stick to what is all over it anyway. Since both the floor and the adhesive may contain asbestos, it is a very good idea to cover it all up. You may be able to remove just the shoe moulding, but, would probably be better to remove the baseboards too. Nothing wrong with sheet vinyl. They make some very nice designs now, and it is very durable.

I like it. It's a great blend with green undertones. Works just Fine. I'm kinda liking the flooring. It is almost a retro style feeling that you could add to the overall design.

Thanks! We would like it and keep it if it was clean, as it's in decent shape otherwise. As it is, apart from professional cleaning (which wouldn't cost a whole lot less than new vinyl flooring) we can't figure out how to get the layers of wax of off it. The discoloration is bad enough that even I can see it. I think they must have had furniture in certain places and just waxed around it.

I found this.... How do you remove wax buildup from vinyl flooring?

Mix 1 gallon of warm water, 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of cream of tartar in a bucket. Dip a mop into the solution and apply it to the floor. Allow it to sit for a few minutes until the wax softens. Scrub the floor in a circular motion, using a scrub brush.

Thanks! We've tried vinegar mixtures, ammonia mixtures, various cleaners, and things like tsp. Some of the things we tried removed some wax but only with hours of scrubbing - hardly worth it. I think if we were to decide to keep it this floor may need some harsher chemicals and one of those floor stripping machines they use in commercial buildings. The people who lived here last had this place in terrible condition.

Here's the new floor. We ended up deciding to go with vinyl and to cover the old floor. Hopefully that was the right choice.

My wife doesn't love it, but I think she just hasn't gotten used to the change yet. She thinks it looks too new and doesn't match the walls or her style. As long as she's not crying, though, I figure it isn't too bad and just have to wait for her to get used to it. :)

We both do wish we could have salvaged the old linoleum, but I think this will be better for resale and easier to keep clean.

Just a tip on picking out coordinating, same tone paint colors. Use a color 2-3 shades lighter on the same color swatch. They will coordinate.

I like the floor. It makes a huge difference in the room. Hopefully, your wife will grow to love it. It is a better floor for resale in the future.
