Alternatives for cedar siding on 1970's shed style contemporary?

I have a 1970's shed style house with cedar siding. With the cost of lumber at a ridiculous high right now, estimates just to band-aid repair some of the rotten wood and re-paint the entire thing to match old and new wood are coming in as high as 20K. I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off just to re-side the entire house in an alternate product like Hardie Board or KWP Eco-Side Engineered Wood. Waiting on estimates for both options. Any other product suggestions? Also I'm considering doing all vertical and in a monochrome dark color. The new front door is Sherwin Williams Sealskin which is a deep brown-black. That was a color I was playing with, along with SW Urbane Bronze, for the entire exterior. I thought with the dark brown fence and warm toned stone that might be a better decision than my original idea to go black. (But then I found an inspiration pic of black next to warm toned stone & it looks good, in my opinion. So I'm torn.) I included a few pics of my house and the inspo pic. Suggestions please for alternatives to cedar siding, exterior colors and if I should go all vertical?

I like your inspiration idea. I would look into Hardie plank. The stone on your house is very attractive, so I would go with it.

Thin out the tree by the entry and add some interesting plants to your foundation.

Love the all monochromatic paint scheme. The color to add to your mix to sample is black fox by Sherman Williams. That labor and materials price doesn’t sound that shocking to me I suspect you’ll spend a ton more ripping all that off and putting on hardy and repainting. That said I think Hardy is a good option for you but don’t expect savings

How about a barn style building? The loft, or part of it, could be an office or 'man cave'. I saw one set of plans where the attached silo was actually a spiral staircase. It wouldn't match the house, but wouldn't stick out like a tin box.

I will spend some time this evening browsing through it and the site you posted Awm, and the northcrest site, thank you palimpsest. Patty cakes, I have searched for 70s contemporary and 70s remodel on houzz, but had few hits, I'll follow your search suggestion and broaden my search a bit. Mj lb, my house is a two story with a walk out basement (so effectively three stories from the back) with some lovely : / diagonal cedar siding on part of the front with a small, slightly inset front stoop. I'm just flummoxed about where to go from here.

If the rot isn't extensive, you can replace the rotted boards. If it is extensive, then you might have rot in the structural parts and vinyl siding will just hide it. My house is about 100 years old, shingle-style. The shingles and the porch boards clearly have bits from different eras (with the porch boards, you can tell if you inspect the nails, with the shingles, it's the same thing, you have to be looking very closely). With paint covering everything, none of it is obvious (unless, of course, you're carefully examining the house for signs of older or newer parts) I think wood just looks so much better.

Thank you, Laura, Patricia and Glo! I do agree painting the trim the same as the house to blend in will help bring it more transitional than traditional. Great point! Will definitely be replacing deck railing to metal and front doors to something that brings in light. I love the frosted suggestion to keep privacy. By saying I want to keep the brick, I just don't want to replace it. I am open to painting it, but maybe that is a bad idea? I like to concept of dark charcoal, but the light brick looks a bit jarring against this. Should I look towards a lighter, or white palette for the exterior if I keep the brick as-is? If going with a darker palette, do I paint/wash the brick to be less contrasting? Also, I am still stuck on where I could add some natural cedar siding accents to bring in some nautral color/texture. Would I do this on the right entry wall, the entire entry cove, 270°?

Oh no, Hallett & Co.... I guess I should have clarified that. I’m not expecting less cost. I’m just thinking if it’s that much to band-aid then maybe I should consider spending a bit more to just get a new, no maintenance product.
