Mums getting ready to bloom??
Comments (18)Boy that was quick. Here's the message I received from the grower: "Dear Kevin, Our grower says to give the mums a hard pinch-pinch the stems back at least half way not just picking off buds-then give the plants a big dose of commercially produced fertilizer such as miracle gro or Peters and that should break them of their premature budding. Sometimes shade or real cool night time temperatures can make them bud earlier as well. Hopefully this will help. Twyla Faribault Growers, Inc." So it looks like the really cool night temps we experienced this spring can trigger the bud formation. I've included a link to this grower. If you're looking for a variety of mums at really reasonable prices, I highly recommend them. Comments (3)Ditto the advice on dividing. For reference though, you will usually find mums that are hardy in the ground in your zone labelled as "hardy mums" in the perennial section of the nursery, and more than likely they'll only be there in late summer/fall (some places do carry earlier in the season, but it's a rarity, and not all nurseries carry hardy mums, a lot only carry the "Stick This Gigantic Potted Mum on the Porch and Toss It and the End of the Season" mum - yea, its bewildering, all right...)....See MoreQuestion re: Mammoth mums
Comments (3)I was just now listening to the podcast of the Ron Wilson In the Garden show from this morning. He broadcasts out of Cincinnati Ohio and he just got done mentioning the Mammoth Mums and how hardy they are supposed to be. He also mentioned that you need to give them plenty of room. As I said in the other thread, I have one of the My Favorite Mums that are older but in the same group of Mums as the MMs. My plant has never gotten as large as these are supposed to be, even though it has come back for 8 years and was even moved to a different house. If it were me, I'd wait until Spring to divide any mum. It is getting a bit late to do it now. When we moved, it was the around the second week of August that my mum was dug up and moved. It never missed a beat and bloomed on time. But it's a month later now, and I'd not be moving or dividing mums. Linda...See MorePlanting mums
Comments (17)A few years ago 'My Favorite Mum' was on the market and touted as being very hardy. They were developed by the U of M and have done well in Z3. Unfortunately they were only offered for sale in the fall and most didn't survive the winter. They were pulled from the market place and then reintroduced as 'Mammoth Mums' by Monrovia, but still are only reliable if spring planted. They come in many colors but coral and white are the only I've tried and they've been with me a couple of years. Neil Anderson, who worked on the development, mentioned in a talk that one indication of hardiness is if the mum develops basal shoots in the fall that will then grow next year. On a different tact, 'Clara Curtis' is a very old cultivar that does well in all the gardens I know. It is single and pale pink. It blooms in August, a little early in the mum season.
