Comments (7)Shade if you can...and yes, very hot the next few days. I plant very thick, especially when the hot weather is coming...though this is a bit early for us...NY/NJ.... My salad beds are shaded 50%. I still may have trouble with the spring mix but i already have a hot summer mix i've been cutting... I have salad all summer by planting a heat tolerant blend and shade...don't have the water pressure for misting but would if i could. (gravity spring fed) We will never loose the water/burn/magnifier myth... I've had a few mid day showers this spring with the sun shinning...no harm...See MoreHow did you preserve the view yet prevent interior fading?
Comments (9)Again, thank all of you for responding, very helpful. Your postings tell me that thermal pane windows will not be enough, but if I add film, that will void the new window warranty of seal failure. The film I'm considering, Huper Optik, has a warranty that supposedly covers seal failure. I'm going to have to read the file print. Any thoughts, or info, regarding this aspect? Fun2BHere, my familyroom sofas need replacing, and I also am going to go with a Sunbrella indoor fabric to prevent fabric fading. bpathome and romy, do you have thermal pane windows with the film? Do you recall if your film is a nanoceramic? My research shows that is the film with the least tinting that is also the best at markedly reducing fading....See MoreHow to prevent sleeper sofa frame from scratching hardwood

Comments (6)The lights from the box stores are garbage, and yes the price difference is totally worth it. They're flimsy and designed to need replacement on the sooner side. Even the ground stakes you get with higher quality light fixtures are way better, based on the product you showed. The stakes we get with our fixtures are longer and the fins are wider and thicker. In this lovely Virginia clay we often have to hammer the stakes in with a rubber mallet - they're not budging. In addition to a longer lifespan, there are other advantages to higher quality fixtures. Generally speaking, you can space the pathlights farther apart, meaning fewer fixtures and you eliminate the "runway five-niner" look so common in subdivisions. I installed a set of Malibu-ish lights for a client (It was 2008 don't judge) and I was amazed at how tightly spaced they had to be. For budget-minded customers I spec Alliance Outdoor Lighting and Dauer LED. If you're a gadget person, Alliance BT bullet lights can be controlled individually or as a group via bluetooth, including changing the colors at will. I also like FX Luminaire, and the fixtures from CAST lighting feel like weapons used to kill Mr Body in the boardgame Clue (or the amazing movie starring Tim Curry but I digress). It's not like there's any reason NOT to select from multiple manufacturers to get the look you want. Most of our lighting designs use 3-5 different makes of fixture. And remember that part of the beauty of landscape lighting is it's essentially modular. If cost is an issue, it can be done in stages, so long as you get a large enough transformer to handle the eventual load. With LED lamps clocking in at only 2-5 watts per fixture, you can usually light a good chunk of your property with a 150 watt transformer. Oh and also, look at IlluminFX wifi timers. I was skeptical, as I have a bluetooth-controlled box at home that I don't love, but the app control is terrific and way easier than crouching behind a bush and peering into a stainless steel shoebox to change the timer....See MoreSusan Davis
