I didn't know about multi-point doors -- I was very interested to learn. To point out the obvious, this'd be a great choice for the garage-to-house door (which is more attractive to a burgler because he isn't so exposed to the world while he's breaking in); however, if you're looking at a front door with a sidelight, it provides no additional protection. If the burgler puts his elbow through the sidelight and turns the latch, he's unlocking all the "points" at once. I didn't check the price of these locks, but I'm sure they're expensive. I think they'd totally be worth the cost for the garage-to-house door. Not so much for the front door. I'm sure of the bottom line though: A door, any door, can be broken -- if the thief is determined enough. If a burgler has targeted you personally, he's going to get into your house. However, few of us are going to be personally targeted. Most burglers are going to pick a house because it looks less secure than the others around it. So the key is to have a good, overall plan: Certainly the door is a key component in the plan, but a backyard fence, automatic lighting, and good windows are also important players. For most of us, the back door -- so often a sliding glass door or French doors -- is the weak point in our house's armor. That's the one that's hard to defend.

A couple of waterproof doormats will go a long way to keeping the floor in good condition. That and a bench so kids can swap for house shoes as soon as they come in. Look for a finish that can be recoated without having to resand or chemically strip - I know some are out there. A rug made from carpet tiles (see flor.com) might work, ;leaving the hardwood exposed around the edge but protected in front of the door. Buy spares.

Now I must go look some more and then...shudder...check the prices. Felt better having a local source ( in case of problems) as was custom size. Believe it saved on shipping, too. I would choose a forest green, but I would also stay away from all of the Astrobright colors - they are a bit too electric, I think. I would also consider how the door looks when it is opened into the house and consider the colors in the entry room. Black is definitely safe, but I consider it a bit too urban or formal for your setting - it makes me think of 10 Downing Street. I would want a symmetrical entryway for a black door.
