Poll about vaccines: yearly or not?
Comments (11)My cats get their initial shots and their boosters the following year. One of my cats hasn't had a rabies shot since I've had her (and her vet records from before I adopted her indicate she hasn't had one in about six years). She is 9yo, sickly enough to require daily steroids, and my vet and I have both agreed not to vaccinate her for rabies again. I agreed not to cart her around town with a sign saying, "My cat hasn't had a rabies shot", and the vet agreed to sign a waiver if it came down to it. My other, healthy, young cat may get boosters next year (I adopted her last year), but she won't be getting any more than the legally required rabies vaccs after that. She will get regular check-ups, but I'm not convinced that animal vaccines work any differently than human vaccines. We don't get vaccinated for everything every year, so she doesn't need it. Not to mention, my cats live indoors and don't encounter any other cats. I am not convinced that animal vaccines are so much more ineffective than human vaccines that they need to be administered every year. Beyond the legally required rabies vaccinations (which can be waived for medical reasons), I will not vaccinate any of my animals beyond their boosters. I'm not even convinced boosters are required, but I'll go along with it for now. However, I am a huge proponent of getting a vet's eyes on your pet on a regular basis, regardless of vaccines. Vaccines aren't the only reason to take your pet to the vet on an annual basis. Younger pets can get away with it for much longer, but it's a good idea to get older pets tested for common illnesses/disorders. Even basic bloodwork can indicate issues that can be easily treated if caught early....See MoreBooster shot availability?
Comments (26)I think these questions should be encouraged. Many reading these pages might be looking for similar answers. I understood what you meant by saying 'shots' meaning our first series of two shots. My second Pfizer two weeks ago tomorrow. Our first shots started/kicked in our immune response. Our second shots, identical to the first, gave a 'boost' to our existing immunity. So it is technically a 'booster'. I agree to just saying, "I have my second shot and am fully vaccinated at this time". Another booster, possibly in the Fall, will do the same. It will boost and strengthen our existing immunity if they see a decline in protection. All this is unknown at this time. Fortunately we have the 50 thousand+ trial participants that are about 7 months from their shots....and still protected The other unknowns are the variants. So far it looks promising. And it seems the preparations are well under way for the Fall/Winter booster if/when it is needed. I agree that it should be much easier to get....like a flu shot. It is clear how devastating it would be if yet another spike in infection happens. Helping to convince those still hesitant to get vaccinated is troubling....See MoreExpiration dates on covid vaccines?
Comments (0)Tonight I was trying to remember the exact date DH and I got our moderna booster. I remembered we had taken pictures of our vax cards. I brought up the picture and realized something that has me a bit worried. The lot number for both our second moderna shot and our booster shot are exactly the same. We got our second moderna shot in arpil. The expiration date on the sticker for the 2nd shot that they placed on our card states the vaccine expiration date as Oct 6th 2021. The booster sticker has no expiration date but since it is the same lot number did we end up getting an expired booster?...See MoreCOVID booster? WWYD?
Comments (64)Someone we do business with just returned from a funeral for a family member who died of covid and a friend of DIL's just got it. It will always be circulating now and there will always be new variants. The best way to protect yourself from flu and COVID is to get every available update -- presumably annual boosters at this point. Dedtired, I hear you on that. I went through a period where I would do anything to avoid seeing a doctor because I'd been through too much, but at least vaccines are available at most pharmacies. It's still a stick, but this last flu and last covid were kind of a nothing for me -- other than having to wait and study shampoo bottles and nail polish. Hope your brother is feeling better and copletely recovers very soon....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
