Say Aloe to my new plant!
Been looking for this for awhile. My son up and gave it to me. This Tulista (haworthia) marginata doesn't produce pups so coping has to be by seed or a leaf cutting. Never did a leaf cutting on Aloe or haworthia before. Saw a u-tube video on it and make it look easy. Yea right.
Just saw this at Lowes. Looks to be a Tulista hybrid??? One of their no ID in stupid pots with no drain holes.
Leaves too thick to be haworthia? For $8 figured why not. The others had some brown spots that could be rot from cold. Plant was in dry peat. Of course I re-potted.

Aloes does best with pups removed so I de-pupped it and they are all doing well. Unlike Sansevieria which I think does best when grown in a family group, Aloes do best when left signal.

Comments (30)Hi! I have a couple of aloe plants I purchased last year. At first they were doing so-so, then having one in the window - sunlight from about 10am to sunset - it did really well. Produced lots of pups.....not sure what happened but the other one never quite "blossomed" as well. It's always been a bit scraggly. I have them both in plastic pots right now - with large drainage holes. I used the cactus soil (sometime last year) and they seemed to both start doing well. I took them both away from the window because at one point, they started looking like they were burning. So. The one with the pups is doing well....or at least better than the scraggly one. The scraggly one I have about 3-4 feet from the sunny window. It still looks very limp, some brownish looking leaves. One or 2 dried right up, but the others mushy. None of the leaves have shown any signs of wilting - they actually have always looked more plump than not. BUT, they are droopy, and going on the browish side. I have let the soil get more dry than wet (mainly to get rid of the stupid pesky teeny black flies that always seem to arrive when I bring home a new plant from the store...yes....I am a plantaholic)....so. My question.....should I move both aloe plants back to the window? Leave where they are? Repot? I have a picture of the scraggly one, but not of the pup one. Oh, there is a vent right under the window that the air conditioning blows through - more away from the window than towards it. :( This is the scraggly one Closer pic of scraggly in the spot it shares with the other plants Help!!!! The Ikea here in Brooklyn is almost a joke when you look at a bunch of deserted and miserable plastic plants labelled "assorted succulents". I was eyeing the "Black's sharks fin" too, in the listing the plant looked really.. black. So I'm guessing it needs some sun to change its shade. I was looking at this Black Aloe too, I guess it shares similar pigmentation when exposed to prolonged sun. Comments (14)Hi Eileen, Thanks for asking! My aloe plant is doing much better now in terms of hydration. Following the advice of hoovb, I changed the mix, put the plant outside for the summer in a wider pot, and kept careful watch. It seemed to stop declining, which was a relief. The leaves didn't really start to improve till I decided to submerge the entire planter when watering (for about 10 minutes each time), rather than pouring from the top. Around July last year — discovering that the roots were still mostly way too dried out — I repotted again with roughly 30% cactus soil mixed in with 70% grittier stuff (including pumice and bark), and put in a thicker cotton wick. I watered differently afterward, mostly from the top again, since the soil was different. Since then, the leaves have plumped back up. (Some of what I did went against instinct, but I tried to observe how my plant was reacting.) See attached photo of how the aloe is now — not as thirsty, though suffering from lack of light (a combo of winter and surrounding buildings, even though I use a grow light; btw, it doesn't live in that spot). I hope to correct that now that the season is changing, and it can go back on the balcony. It has a way to go toward full health. I credit hoovb's advice for setting my plant on the road to recovery, so those are good instructions to follow, especially regarding observing your plant closely and adjusting where needed. Comments (10)I totally understand @J Garrett, but @KarenS, NYC is so right. The potassium in bananas aids growth, just not in bananaform 😂😂 there are loads of these misinfirmations on the web. We have such a great saying in Dutch that sadly does not translate to english but let's just say that potassium (and other beneficial elements for plants) come in many forms and not all forms work for your plant. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoAdding another Aloe to the list. I was gifted an Aloe Christmas Carol. Loved it, and then saw Christmas Sleigh. So thought I saw one miss labeled and purchased it. Well it turned out to be another Christmas Carol so now I have lots of them.
This is a Christmas Carol not Sleigh.More;
I though this was Sleigh due to the darker blue/green coloration of the leaves but turns out to be another Carol. Which at this point I don't care due to they look almost exactly alike. Sleigh has distinct red spines while Carol seems to run into each other.Came with lots of pups which I removed and potted up.

Point being, Just too close to make a difference to me.

3 years agoTo me anyway, I feel that all plants that could interbreed are of one and the same. So in that thinking, They are all Aloes to me. Some Haworthia are more aloe like than others and were re-grouped into different species like Tulista which are some of the tallest growing Haworthia but small compared to Aloes.
Below is a seed pod that fell into this pot from when they were outside last summer and thru the winter they sprouted into something of which I don't really know. I think the pod came from an aloe looking haworthia but not sure.
They completely over took the pot that the Agave vict was in. Most hybrids show fast hardy growth. This spring I am going to transplant. Following year I will give out to many friends here.This Agave is weird due to the fact that it stays very small and pups like crazy.
Also I found some Oak acorns sprouting in my pots now. There are no oak trees anywhere around my house so I think it was from some strange chipmunks that like to travel long distance.

Very similar to Aloe Purple Haze but looks a little darker or more pointer. Side by side comparison I'll show this summer grown together under same conditions to see.
