Clear coat over railing

I am updating my staircase, spindles and railing Tested a section with gel stain it was a nightmare so going with white. I’m using Benjamin Moore advance in semi gloss. I’ve used this on all my trim and it’s an excellent product. My question is should I do some type of clear coat over the railing to make cleaning easier and more durable? My understating is poly will cause it to yellow.

No, paint does not need varnish over it. I'd just go with the advance on its own, no top coat. I haven't used it on something quite so high touch, but I've used it on furniture with no issues; my nightstand looks just like the day I painted it, and I toss my glasses on it, paw around to find my alarm, have a clicker sitting on it, etc. I dont abuse it, but I'm not babying it either. The have a cabinet paint also that you could look into ... the people at your paint store can advise whether it might be better or worse than the Advance.

Thank you I have used it on cupboards previously so I’ll prob just stick with it and see what happens!

That's exactly what I am getting for my bathtub and it's supposedly going to be installed on Friday. Whether it stays with no rail though depends on whether it can be made watertight. If it can't be made watertight, they will install a very low metal rail. My DH has the same door in his shower and he needed the little rail to make the shower watertight. Here is a picture of it. Here is something to consider. Your walls might not be perfectly straight so the shower door company might have to make a template to make the doors fit properly. Some off the shelf shower doors have a little bit of play in case your walls aren't plumb, but many do not and that is something to think about.

Any of the sodium percarbonate cleaners will not harm your flowers and will kill mildew, mold etc. You will have to scrub with a deck scrub brush and let it dwell for about 20 minutes, then rinse off very well. You can put a clear sealer down, but be aware that clear sealers offer little or no protection from sun damage, which is a major cause of deterioration of wood decks. You would be better off putting down something with color that would offer sun protection. Marty

Rustoleum paint may take many days to dry when applied over the rust treament materials made by other companies. Reprime immediately any bare areas, then wait at least two weeks to do anything else. Once the first primer coat dries, subsequent coats of either primer or finish paint should dry normally.

If the squirrels are gone, I would sand lightly, fill any deep holes with wood filler and repaint. If the squirrels are still around, I would not bother to repair the railing.

Poly over paint?!?!?!?

NO, NO......a hundred times NO!!!!

What nobody realizes, is that paint has to cure for MANY DAYS, sometimes even two WEEKS!

You can't trap a paint-system that's trying to CURE-OUT, under clearcoats!! It will usually lead to wrinkling, possible peeling, etc.

Clearcoats are NOT NEEDED, in ANY way, over a good trim-paint.

Besides............NOBODY is going to wait 2-3 weeks, & setup shop again to do coats of totally unneeded clears.

Whoever started this goofy notion that Polys need to be done over paints.....should be strang****.

Oooooppps! No, something far worse! Make them listen to country-music!!!!
