Low Level Freestanding Deck Footings
Comments (5)The point of going below the frost line is to prevent frost heave- the expansion of the soil each winter as the ground freezes. If you don't put the bottom of the footing below the frost line, it will move a little each season as the ground freezes and thaws. It is pretty easy to dig 42" deep footings for a deck since they don't have to be very wide. Just get a post hole digger and get to work digging the narrowest hole you can get to the proper depth. My parents live in MN and they had a deck with frost heave problems with the footings. The replacement footings went 48" deep but were pretty easy to dig....See MoreDo rainlings look good for a ground level deck?

Perhaps a small concrete landing could be added by the door and the deck could be built around the pad?? We definitely don't want grass in that area as this is more of a woodland setting....See MoreBetsey Biggs
