Is it common to put extra slabs on hold for countertops?

Our fabricator has asked me to put an extra slab on hold for each of the areas of our new build. She says it will take 2 slabs for our kitchen, but to put 3 on hold “just in case”. I think it is a super smart idea and totally agree that better safe than sorry...... but there are only 2 slabs available of the stone I want for the kitchen. I know I need to move on and find an altenative, but I was just wondering if that is common to put an extra slab on hold?

If the stone has a movement and pattern, you may want 2 extra slabs. Stone shopping is a chicken and egg thing. You either design a kitchen to the stone size available, or you buy the stone that works with the size and shape of the kitchen you‘ve designed. A “2 slab” kitchen in a no pattern solid stone can easily become a “4 slab” kitchen with a bunch of angles and corners and a busy pattern.

If you are looking to "hold" three slabs you will want to make sure they are from the same bundle. You do not want to have two slabs from one bundle and a third from another. This is especially true if the stone has movement throughout. Also, be sure you see the three exact slabs they are planning on putting on hold. You don't want any surprises at installation time.

I'm behind in my yardwork due to rain and spring fever has hit hard this year! what have you done with extra stone from your slab?

Our company sells soapstone by the square foot rather than by the slab, so we have lots of remnants left over. Some of the remnants are big enough to do small jobs such as vanities, desks and such. As mentioned above, they are great for fireplace surrounds, hearths, and mantles. Many of the smaller remnants become sink parts and we are building more and more of those. Smaller pieces yet are good for stone corbels. I have also played around with pieces at work and made soap dishes, and business card holders. If I ever get time, I would like to try and make knobs for drawers. The stuff works great out in the yard too. Round and oval sink cut outs(vanity sink size) are good stepping stones. Also, random sized broken pieces make a good little walking path. I have one from our driveway to the front step. And to answer the thickness part, yes, you can make the stone thinner. A good cup wheel on a grinder, lots of care, and lots of patience will thin the stone down.

I've got short arms. 30" deep counters wouldn't work well for me - I know from my island that if something gets pushed more than 26-27" back, I have to reach really hard or go around the island to get it. If my edge counters were 30" deep, it would be difficult for me to clean a splash off the back splash or back of the counter and difficult to reach plugs and switches there. I wouldn't be able to reach glasses at the back of a wall cabinet 30" from the front of the counter even on the bottom shelf. Even with 24" counters, our old garbage disposal switch was a little bit into the corner because of the window over the sink and I really had to stretch to reach it. I'm very happy having an airswitch now and not having to reach to the wall for this task. It's a stretch to reach things in the corner upper cabinet too. Height isn't the whole story, I'm short and the deviation form average height seems to be almost entirely in my legs being short with a fairly average torso and my arms are also short compared to average. Deep counters may work for most people but they wouldn't work for me.

Trinitybay, we were a national distribution center located in Southern California supplying select colors for the Home Depot Program. I am going back about a year but there were still fabricators buying 2cm to support the program and I know that fabricators were using our materials for their walk-in customers as well. Unfortunately, I donÃ¢ÂÂt have the fabricator network list anymore. As for the 6Ã¢ÂÂoverhang, itÃ¢ÂÂs in the Marble Institute or AmericaÃ¢ÂÂs countertop Module. I canÃ¢ÂÂt remember the exact wording but the recommendations were suggestive of: 6Ã¢ÂÂ or greater or when less than 2/3 of the countertop is cantered, supports are needed. For 3cm the MIA recommends 10Ã¢ÂÂ or greater but in the North East itÃ¢ÂÂs not uncommon to see 12Ã¢ÂÂ. If you want to avoid corbels and brackets have the installer extend the plywood sub-tops a few more inches. Hope this helps.

@User Thanks for the feedback. I think we should be safe with just 1 extra slab. The island will be 1 slab on its own, and then the perimeter is made up of 2 separate runs of countertop that are each shorter than the length of the slabs I’m looking at. So no seems, no angles to match grain, etc.

@Morningstar Stone & Tile Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely make sure I see each and every slab I put on hold.
