I've started this thread a couple of times in the past and it resulted in some good exchanges. Anyone can jump onto the thread and list their haves and make offers, but please do not request plants for postage.

The idea is that at this time of year we are all cleaning up our gardens and digging out extras of things that are multiplying more than the space we've alloted to them. One person's compost item is another gardener's treasure!

Gottagarden, the exact same thing happened to me. I ended up with those orange daylilies too(Hemerocallis). That was my first introduction to "common" names from people who are not really into gardening. I try and use the latin if it's pronouncable (and that's a big IF on some of those honkers) or appropriate to the situation. For instance I certainly wouldn't ask the clerk at Walmart where the Hemerocallis are. Pointless. Funny about prejudice though. I once asked a friend of mine why she didn't use the latin to talk about some of her plants when she knew what it was. She replied that the rest of her friends would think she was trying to be uppity. So now I realize that there are people out there who garden who don't want to know more then they already know and consider it snobbish to use a name they are not familiar with. I like to learn the latin if possible and how to pronounce it. But I guess there are two different ways to see things even in gardening...One of the strangest common name mix ups was when I lived in Indiana. I was told that some people refer to Bell Green Peppers as Green Mangos. Now that would be confusing.

re: cow names - I was a city kid moved to dairy country. Learned all those terms, but the hardest to remember/figure out was Polled Herford vs heifer. And with horses, the difference between a colt and a foal, colt being kind of the generic term many use incorrectly for a foal. That definitely wasn't the limit to my ignorance about country living, that's for sure, but the folks there were equally ignorant about some of the things those of us raised in the city were more familiar with. Usually it has nothing to do with brain power, just exposure. One of my favorite stories about common sense is a cousin who married young, with no domestic skills at all (her mother did everything for her). I was visiting and her husband went to the kitchen to get us some refreshments. He call out, "Susie, why did you put the ice cube trays in the freezer without filling them with water?" She replied, "But we didn't NEED ice cubes." She's not lived that one down.

I like common names too but they also lead to ID problems since the same common name is sometimes applied to different species. And then you have the reverse problem of people knowing different common names for the same species. In the US, you have different names in different parts of the country. It is like in "The Walking Dead" where different groups have come up with their own common name for the zombies. Lastly, there are a zillion bugs out there that don't have common names. Many North American moths did not have common names until Peterson Guides would not publish Covell's moth book until Covell came up with names for them. So he and his family sat around a table and made up names. Borror & DeLong was one of the books I used when I did the bug ID class at OSU. The university's insect collection is named after Dr. Tripplehorn. AFAIK, he still hangs around the building where it is stored but it has been two years since I've seen him. I have clue what Dr. Johnson's story is. Anyway, when you take the bug ID class, you are required to get the ID down to the family level. And I can speak from experience that just getting my required collection IDed to family level sucked up hours and hours and hours of my time. There are 100+ species of Reduviidae in the US. More do ambush attacks than stalking. I believe all are going to stick their prey with their beak and feed through the beak. The ones that feed on the blood of vertebrates would have no interest in caterpillars.

What a great thread! Due to time restaints at the time, I shouldn't post anything hitting the compost because I won't really have the time to do much clean-up or trading unless it might be small and easy.

I do however need/want at least some of those helleborus foetidus seedlings.

I'm not just ripping these out, but from your want list do have a few
...say 3 maybe?
or cuttings from about anything from the 'cuttings' section of my trade list?

Might you be interested in a small First Class mail (under 13 OZ) trade sent in a small box? For small trades it is a lot more economical and goes just as fast, I am told by my postmaster.

Hi,
I would be interested in your Ice Follies, and your yellow trumpet daffodils.

I have a lot of large all green hostas, variegated green and white hostas...not as large as the all green ones, and I have about 100 "lavendar" irises that I picked up a few years ago from a pile left by my mailbox...I planted them in a too shady area and have never seen them bloom. They are leaving this year. I also have dug up japanese maple babies by the dozens. I have a few more shade plants that I would have to look up the names of. Let me know if you are interested.

Winter Honeysuckle (shrub, blooms in winter and is fragrant)
Pecan Tree and Oak Tree seedlings

If anyone else is interested in my commons, I'm essentially looking for self-seeding, returning wildflowers suited to Texas.

I think this is a great idea. I'm leaving on a two week vacation out of the country on Friday 4/25 until 5/9, but I'd be interested in doing some trading when I get back. If anything below interests you send me an email before Friday or be prepared to be patient. But I will answer when I get back (or while I'm gone - I will have email access) and then we can make arrangements.

The things that I know I can dig to trade right now are:
* Monarda didyma, Bee Balm - standard red, and possibly "Blue Stocking" or "Grand Parade"
* Lysimachia punctata, Loosestrife - "Alexander" variegated leaves; and standard green leaves
* Lysimachia, gooseneck - one trade (I hope somebody wants this. I don't have room for it and I hate to destroy plants.)
* Rudibeckia fulgida, Black-Eyed Susan - "Goldstrum"
* Crocosmia - "Lucifer"
* Achillea, Yarrow - "Cerise Queen", "Apricot Delight", "Strawberry Seduction", unnamed Pink

I have rooting in the cold frame right now some cuttings of Butterfly Bush "Cornwall Blue" and standard Pussy Willow.

I need the variegated loosestrife!!!, and a small start of a couple of the yarrows. I sure know a little dab will do ya with yarrow.

How about twisted willow for pussy willow. They are just as easy to root as the pussy willow. I could send you 6 for 6. I have difficulty getting pussy willow to grow from rooting compound to the yard - that's why I suggested 6. Twisted willow limbs make awesome canes or walking sticks.
