It will correct itself, but if you can find a male flower of the same species (C. pepo), you could speed things up a bit. High performing hybrids often lead with females. Sometimes it pays to have a couple of older OP plants as pollenizers. Maybe something like Golden Zucchini in your case, since Orelia is a yellow zuke.

It took me a moment to remember what courgettes are. Here we call them zucchinis. :) I don't know why your seeds didn't germinate. Zucchini needs warmth to germinate but if you're comfortable, they should be too. One would assume it wasn't a problem with the seeds as one did germinate. As for the chard and lettuce, they prefer much cooler temps to germinate and grow than zucchini. I recall when I 1st started gardening and I planted 4 zucchini plants. I thought they were going to take over the world! The plants sprawled all over the place and they had way more zucchinis than we could eat. The neighbors started to run when they saw me coming. So it may be a heaven send that only one germinated, lol! Btw, there's a vegetable gardening forum here at GW. You'd probably get more responses to your query there. oh Flora, what is a Garbanzo or Chick Pea called over there? My friend and I were on the phone and I was teasing him about taking him on an American Vegetable tour when he comes in September. Apparently some veggies are named differently over there. Chick Pea is Chick pea That's right, they have aubergines and courgettes.... egg plant and zuke I remember being in a supermarket in the UK with an American med student and ozzie Physical therapist, and a huge but good natured debate that went on for hours, well into pub time! alcohol help but basically our dispute was courgette in UK, Zuke in USA (can't even spell it) and baby marrow in OZ! American miss out on the greatest of UK fav veg Runner beans which I assumed moving here last year, was a Europian veg, looked it up and found it was native of New England where I am living! the scarlet runner is old fashioned, furry and get tough and stringy quickly, I like polestar smooth not stringy or tough until very old, prolific, and I shudder to tell you where you can get them, incase I can't buy any next year! also people in the know in the UK call broccoli calabrese, but broccoli that is so amazing it ranks with asparagus is purple sprouting broccoli ! I will share but trust me I will be upset if I can't get any, Thompson and Morgan, sold out at the mo on PSB.

Flavia - I also have a deluge of slugs and snails. Who doesn't over here ;-) Once the courgette plants have a bit of size on them snails will not eat the leaves, although they may eat the flowers and the developing courgettes. I plant my courgettes in the ground with cut off plastic bottles around the stems and sprinkle some slug pellets around. You can use the ferric phosphate ones rather than the metaldehyde ones. Fleece covers will not stop snails. In fact I find they love getting into the folds and hiding. The greenhouse is doable but makes a lot of extra work for you. The temperature outside is fine for them although you might extend the season by planting some in the greenhouse later. Also in the greenhouse you may need to hand pollinate a bit. BTW eggs shells, although widely promoted as a deterrent, have no effect at all on slugs or snails in my experience. And the stones you have put around some of the plants make an ideal hiding place for slugs. Rest assured your plants do not have any diseases or pests i can see. Just cultural issues.
