Need help with desert rose

The plant that I have been fostering is suffering cause of cold weather and lack of sunlight, the roots are well and the sand is moist, the bark is turned wet and mosit and slowing the moist is moving up the bark from a small portion to almost the whole back now. some leaves turned yellow and withered. not sure what to do

How have you been keeping it, do you keep the Desert Rose inside outside? How much are you watering it?

I have keeping him in now, since the temperature drops really low at night, or before that outside. the previous owner watered it twice a week and I water it only after soil is dry.

Any good draining mix will be fine. There are about as many good homemade mixes out there as there are succulent growers. Turface MVP is what I add to mine. If you can wet your mix thoroughly, squeeze it in your hand, and it falls apart, that's good draining. I wouldn't repot until the plant can be moved outdoors and take advantage of the warm outdoor temps and a good light source. I prefer to prune Adeniums in late spring early summer when temps are high and there is little chance of rain. A nice healthy Adenium can handle repot, root and top pruning at the same time during the summer. It's really too early to do anything with them right now in my opinion. randy

Advise needed with pruning my Desert Rose

okay, I managed to upload two photos. You can see that there are two little branches growing out on either side and one a little lower down. Then there are two little roots (I asume that is what it is ) growing out where I made the lowest circle. So, my questions are, where do I cut the stem and what do I do with the three little stems and with those two little roots? The plant is about a foot tall in total. I just 'up-potted' him two weeks ago and all roots are healthy, but my DR has never flowered, I suppose that is because of the neglect earlier on? Any advise will be appreciated, thanks.

Okee dokee, I'm back a bit. Frantically getting ready for state boards in just over a week. I think you all are correct in saying too wet. They were out on the deck of the back porch and it had been raining a lot. Most of my plummies out there have developed rust, I cut off the leaves. So I moved my DR's under the overhang of the porch so they don't get the rain but still get sun. They are looking better. The weather has been hot here, up until yesterday, someone turned off the heat out there and this morning it is 55! However, I'm sure that is not here to stay quite yet. I want to do that un-pot thing and wrap them in paper towels, but not until after state boards, but they are looking much better now. I believe I potted them in cactus soil mixed with some perlite, but it's been awhile. On the thought of them doing the dropping as they get taller, I have one that I have had for many years and it is quite tall and I don't remember it doing that. It concerned me because it was so sudden. Ok, need to get to studying. This past three years of hard work is finally coming to a close. Thanks all, Lauri

Congrats on your seed pod. I've never had any of my adeniums produce one. They are similar to plumeria pods but I don't know how long they take to ripen, at least a few months I'd assume. One it's looking mature I'd cover it with a piece of stocking to catch the seeds. You don't want to remove it from the plant before it's ripe. Good luck. Karyn

If the trunk and the thick roots are firm, it's fine. Just to simplify things, add equal parts perlite in that mix to lighten it up a bit. If you do not have perlite, I strongly suggest putting it back in a smaller pot after that potting material has dried up a bit. The plant itself, if the roots and trunk are firm, will be fine out of the pot in the meantime. The smaller pot will just allow it to dry out faster so it does not stay in wet soil too long.

Adeniums tend to slow down when it is cold (temps below 20C) and they can die if they are wet AND cold at the same time. It's normal for the leaves to turn yellow and drop in winter (they grow back when it's hot).

Like Pagen has stated when it’s cold these guys slow down. These guys are big babies when it comes to the cold. I have a handful and mine are all pretty much dormant, they’re holding on to a few leaves, but not enough to water.

Right now all mine look like this guy below.

I would pot yours up in a mix like what Pagen has mentioned, but I use perlite, pumice, and little bit of cactus soil. You can see how little soil is in the mix. Put t next to a warm window and wait till spring or until it warms up to water. I haven’t watered mine for probably around three months. They will get dehydrated and kinda feel squishy, like a firm orange, but they shouldn’t be mushy. Some winters if they still have held onto some foliage I will water them once a month, but no more.

Yours looks normal imo for the time of year🙂.

It being indoors now I would not water it again with the bottom that wet. Let it go dormant. If you want to learn a thing or two watch maria's garden on youtube.

mine has just finished dropping it's leaves. It has not been watered since sometime early Dec.

Yours looks fine. :) In the winter they can be left alone, out of the sun and kept dry.
