I would move the rug about 6" closer to the TV, so it doesn't line right up with the left arm of the sofa. Then move the sofa by the windows out from the wall enough to make a narrow walkway. You don't want to walk half of and one foot on the rug when walking past the left arm of the sofa into the middle space. This rug placement will also move the center of the furniture and rug closer to the center (L-R) of this room.

The installation of the crown molding is very clumsy. It should have followed the curve of the window frame; I would have them redo this. Better yet, have someone who should know better redo this!

5" would have been enough for your 9' ceilings. IMO no need to paint and then add another piece under it.

Lyn artist wish I could! The install was with the original owner. There is another room with the molding like this. In an attempt to save money, do you think it will look terrible to angle the white section around the windows but keep the molding stopped where it is?

Yes, this section can be either removed or reduced. It really is a bit too much in this space! It just looks so heavy!

Janet, that helps! I'll get a rug for that size. The couch is currently maybe 3-5 inches from the wall so I'll see how it feels being pulled further out. If I keep another sofa there we'll probably keep it as is, but I didn't even thi k of that layout.

This looks better. It depends how much you want to spend. A finish carpenter can do this for and make a more graceful angle on the end by the window.

We'll get some quotes. If we're repainting I'd rather do it right if we can swing it, and it's already going to be a pain going around the windows.

If someone can reasonably scribe the bottom portion to the window arch, or remove the bottom portion altogether it will make a world of difference. A less contrasting wall color would help too.

As for the rug, as long as some portion remains under the front legs of the sofa facing the tv and any other seating in the grouping, that is acceptable. you need a console table or sideboard under the television, but the rug doesn’t have to reach under that piece.

I like your deep toffee paint color. In fact, were it me I wouldn’t bother to remove the crown molding but just paint the same color halfway up the millwork, all around the room , and hang drapes (but leave the window trim white) but that’s just me.

Don’t know if others have already said this but I think the sofa at the window needs to come futher into the room and hope you are looking for a great Italianate ceiling fixture and rug.

I do plan on a console table. Looking for something very slim since that's the main way we walk into the room.

If you are going to hang floor to ceiling curtains definitely leave space for them to swing freely behind the sofa and otherwise wait until you have your rug in place.

As for rug shopping it depends on so many things, like whether you have kids, pets, what your climate is, your budget, your personal vision of how you will most often use the room — and how easy it is to get samples or return rugs if you want to shop online because of the pandemic (certainly the most important consideration!).

If you plan to have workfolk in and paint, a rug can wait but I would pick one before investing in drapes and pillows.

consider a curved half moon, demilune console table for under the tv, or curved cabinet if you need storage for easier traffic flow. Not these necessarily, just indications, can’t see how wide your screen and set up is

I’d stay away from a similar color to what you have on the walls currently. Look at the difference a muted light blue color would make? Brighter, more interest, allows fireplace and floors to stand out.
