Paint medicine cabinet door same color as wall or vanity cabinet?

We are painting the walls SW Light French Grey and the vanity cabinets SW Urban Bronze. I don't want to replace the mirror, which is framed in black. The medicine cabinet door is above the sink to the right of the mirror. Do I paint it Light French Grey to blend in with the wall or Urban Bronze to match the cabinets? Photos below Obviously, we haven't painted yet. Walls are a blue and cabinets and medicine cabinet are painted black. This is the last step of our remodel. 😊

Paint the frame of the mirror the same as the vanity. View it as a “set”. Paint the medicine chest door the same as the wall.

My only other thought is that the mirror is quite large for the vanity.

Well, first of all, depending on what else you put in the room, I don't think that a dark vanity and light mirror frame would necessarily look bad. IF the vanity top is white, and the mirror frame is white... and then you pull the dark color into the room elsewhere (perhaps a picture frame, or border on shower curtain, etc) I think it could look great. But, I also don't think it should be that hard to change the medicine cabinet/mirror, either by revamping or replacing the one you have.... What sort of construction is the white medicine cabinet? If it's an older, wood-framed one, why not just paint it? (For that matter, even it it's metal-framed, you can get metal paints easily enough.) Can you post photos so we can see what you're dealing with? WE might be able to offer some solutions you haven't thought of yet. Also, depending on when the cabinet was installed, and whether it's a fairly standard size or a built-in-place original, it may be a simple matter to remove it and replace with a new one that needs the same size- or slightly smaller- cutout in the wall. Although recessed medicine cabinets are usually more expensive than wall-mount.

Hi, Donna-- If you're trying to create consistency and correlation in your space, one of the easiest ways to to that is to keep your trim tones consistent throughout. Bright white trim always looks clean and fresh - and it's a true neutral. Personally all my millwork (and ceilings) are in UPW - Ultra Pure White - and it's a great, unifying touch that balances out other tones in my palette. Plus, it makes matching things - like blinds - to trim as easy as it should be. And it means fewer paint colors to keep on hand for the inevitable touch-up duty. Cheers!

hey, I made some comments to you on the DIY thread just now. Go back to your original inspiration at the beginning of this thread and find some sea glass/pale aqua/ I think a little blush color goes a long way. Use that at the end to add a little contrast. Maybe as trim on a simple shower curtain, soap/lotion dispensers, or in a little art to finalize it. Personally, I'm thinking using the color on your walls, and painting the vanity an off-white color. Pick a shade out of your counter top. Get some samples and paint several poster boards and see what looks best. Keep it simple! The pops and bling can be added at the end.

Having the cabinets a different colour is not a problem as long as you're conscious of how the colours in the two rooms interact. The colours should look complimentary to each other and you can create a cohesive flow between rooms by carrying one of the colours into the other room. For example, if you have white cabinets in the laundry and green cabinets in the mud room, it will look more cohesive if you have green accents and accessories in the laundry room. You can see an example here where someone tied in a red wall in another room with red accents throughout the open space.

Thank you JudgG for your feedback! I've had that mirror up for over 10 years and never thought that it was too large. How do you determine the size of a mirror? My husband is taking it off the wall to paint around it, so I could replace it now. :) What size mirror would you go with? And would you go with a frameless mirror?

I think it should be several inches smaller. Tape it off and see if you light a small mirror. And, if you decide to keep it, I am going to change my recommendation and ask you to paint it the wall color in a satin finish. It should alter the effect, somewhat, that the mirror is so large.

Yes, I do like frameless mirrors.

Thank you Judy! So, I actually have a couple mirrors around the house I might be able to use instead. One is rectangle and one is round. Both have a 3" width frame. So, if I paint the mirror frame the same as the wall color would you still paint the medicine cabinet door the same as the walls?

I would paint the medicine cabinet the same as the walls.

You can also paint the frame the same color as the vanity.

Agree with Judy that the mirror should be the same color as vanity and side med cab should be the same color as the walls. Just be sure to get a satin or semigloss in the same color as the walls to paint the cabinet. Be sure to do proper prep to take the gloss off of all items before painting, use a primer, too. Top coat will stick better, be less likely to chip.

I ended up painting it the same color as the bottom cabinet. Tough decision, I know! Good luck!
