IMO you want your light to extend out in front of the shelves. If your light is just above the shelves the shadow of the shelves will fall on your countertop.

Oh, fun! Our house is nearing completion and I spent several months obsessing over light fixtures. The ones I kept coming back to are the ones I decided that I had to have. My favorites- (sorry for the cell phone pics) Regina Andrew pendants over island (backsplash in progress- yay!) (I do like that little Visual Comfort flush mount over where the sink will be a lot, too) Regina Andrew wooden bead chandelier in dining room: Restoration Hardware sconces in master bath:

Waiting = good (IMHO too). Swiss cheese lights = fine especially if, as you once said Breezy, you want to "light up your kitchen like an operating theater". I loved that sentiment. I think multi-cans can do that for you, painlessly. Then leave the pendants and even flush mounts for looks; the cans for function. =0.02 Rhome: I hear you about not having necessarily invested your heart in lighting that might justify the $$$. But I have a slightly different take. I think we all sort of budget out, unconsciously, a certain amount for aesthetics, things that make you happy just-because. They just look really pretty or cool or something positive to you -- they give you a lift. I don't think it necessarily matters in which of many possible arenas that sort of whimsical extra comes from -- could be from lighting, or, say, rugs or, say, -- dunno, towel pigs, or, say, windows to the sides of ranges... these little extra touches can put your personal mark on things and make you smile. They can become invaluable for that reason alone. And the forum for that might not matter precisely, only that there exists some certain small percentage of that going on in your life/space/kitchen. So ... I think lighting *can* be that; or not. I think it's perfectly understandable that it never came to that for you, but I'm guessing it has in some other way, say, in those big wonderful fridges, or the island sink ... what about the fantasmagorical corner beverage shelves? That gives you your lift, and lighting could be someone's source of lift. Or not. But it's one possible, reasonable, exterior source of positivity, above and beyond what might justify the $$$. I happened to find a lighting shop years ago run by an old guy whose taste I adored. I loved everything he displayed, and he gave me good prices in return: I bought an awful lot of awfully nice lamps from him. And they *still* make me happy, even one of them now cracked, years later, surviving a brutal renovation, etc. But he's retired, possibly from this earth, even, by now. And I can't replace his taste, his prices, his special spirit. So now the lamps are cheap and good-enough, but they were once quite expensive. And they still make me happy to see them, think about them, place the stories with them. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it doesn't matter where you invest more money than is strictly necessary, just that you do somewhere, sometime. Lighting is a possible way to do this, or not if there's another outlet. That said, too thickly, I'm glad you're waiting, Breezy, because none of the above feels to me quite in keeping with the furniture and floors and kids and space we've seen glimpses of so far.

I ordered it, but from a different vendor than zinc door. It was final sale there and I didn't want to chance it if I didn't like it in the space. So I ordered it from ClaytonGrayHome.com. They had no restocking fee, so I will just pay the shipping if we don't like it. I'm usually not that impulsive, I need to see something quite a few times before I buy, but I have been looking forever, so fingers crossed! Thanks Fori, I talked to a store that carries it in California and he indicated that it was a good brand (but what else is he going to say, right?) Hopefully it'll hold up over the island. Gpraceman- That was my thought originally as well, but I couldn't find anything I liked with a pop of color. I didn't want a small glass pendant so I was thinking of a light with a fabric shade, which is how I actually came across this. We are going to have one wall with blue-grey grass cloth on it, so I hope that will be enough color for the room. Nan57- You're lucky your attic is above! What a great idea. I'm wondering how contractors feel about moving lights. Our ceilings aren't repaired yet, so maybe I'll have to figure that out before they fix. Isabel98-Thank you!! SO glad to hear that!! Kam76, It's expensive-out of my price range, but I've been under budget with some of my other choices so I'm hoping it's worth it. I saw it from $622 to $650. I'd look for gold fixtures like the inside of your pendents rather than using more black.

Thanks @calidesign! Right now, the pendants are the only black in my kitchen. Is that weird? Do I need to tie it in in other places?

No, the black pendents are fine on their own, although your cooktop is also black.

No sconces over the floating shelves. Unless the shelves are glass, lower shelf gets no light. for sure, investigate this etsy vendor or talk with your electrician to do a similar install.
