Living Room Layout- Needs Help

Hello - We have just started looking at getting new furniture for our living room. We need ideas on how we should arrange the new furniture before I can start shopping. Should we put the T.V. on the wall where it is now or on the stairwell? I feel like on the stairwell as I can arrange the furniture on angles and have a cozy feel. My spouse is concerned the T.V. will look funny not centered on the wall as it’s a odd shape. What do you think?

Definitely the wall with the stair well (or maybe even in the corner of the room at an angle?) the wall it’s on currently is so large that the scale of it looks off. You’ll be able to arrange the couch’s much more cozy and maybe get some long curtains for the windows and a huge piece of art for between?

How many people watch the TV together?

Do you have guests over often and also need the extra seating?

What about a nice TV console?

ok, so from what i see now, i would place craft area over by the windows, so you could make use of the natural light. I would go the opposite wall have the two desks face each other give space for extras for first desk obove it on the nothern wall. I would place extras for other desk next to it on the lower north wall. i do not know when you like to use the bean bag. so i would place in front of fireplace. place tv on wall where it is. have the couch face it have 2 swivel chairs next to bean bag, so they can face fire or tv or angle to couch.

Sheer curtains for the windows. Layout will be tricky because of the FP and the heater/ radiator. I think we’re looking at a couch on the wall with that radiator. Maybe a console behind it to block the box. Or a couch lengthwise. Facing the door. A rug, coffee table, maybe a bench or some chairs. Start with what you can. Very charming home. Love it

Does "formal" imply you have another space for tv watching? A family room? Or is this the only room for tv? If the former? Make the tv more secondary........use an adjacent wall. Better by far as the need for built in expense will be less, and same with media console and tv. As below...and I will hope that is the case. - you've another tv spot. Truly....... the view into the room is far better this way in EITHER case. A room needs to make CONVERSATION possible; nobody wants to shout at another off in the distance. And that love seat can just as easily be two VERY comfortable chairs. One quarter inch to a foot below. Don't forget a great rug.....9 x 12. Lighting matters.......art matters. : ) The very last thing you need? An accent wall via paint. One paint color will do it.....please. You will get more help if you post some inspo pics of rooms/styles you love. There are no mind readers here...

@Elaine Doremus Resumes Written Thanks for the response. We have a growing family - currently 2 adults and an infant, with another one on the way. This room will be used a a great deal and ideally the couch(s) we choose will last us for years and years to come. I am so back and forth between a sectional or arranging the room with sofas/chairs - I feel as though a sectional is more inviting for a family with kids but I'm afraid of crowding the space. I went to PB today and fell in love with their slipcovered York Sofa so am considering maybe two couches on either side of the room? Then I worry that the couches are too far apart, leaving awkward space in between. Decisions!

We love to host and have people over often (pre covid). We are thinking we want to mount the TV on the wall. I have not thought about putting the TV in the corner, thanks for that suggestion!

I vote the tv placed on the stairwell wall — I see very nice tv consoles for sale all the time, and that could be the solution as someone else mentioned. And don’t feel like you have to place your couches against the walls — float the seating so it’s off the walls...or float a cozy sectional. A narrow sofa table behind a couch can help with managing drinks since a coffee table might be in the way of traffic.
