What do you think of this tile combo?

Below is a picture that is close to the J&J bathroom we plan to renovate.

My plan was to use 4 x 12 white tile with medium gray grout for the bathtub surround. They would also go behind the toilet at half wall height. The vanity will be white (BM Super White) shaker with a dark soapstone counter. There will be a full wall mirror behind the sinks.

My daughter (young adult) asked if we could use the blue tile (below) on the back wall of the tub/shower. What do you think? The blue tile is 2 x 8. If you think this might work, should I change the white tile size to match the aspect ratio of the blue? 3 x 12 or perhaps 4 x 16? 3 x 12 might be too busy. Perhaps 4 x 16 with a light gray so that it will no longer be the focal point?

***Aside: Why can't I like that blue tile? I bought it as a sample for our guest bathroom reno. It's the right size, the right color, and I like the texture... But I just can't seem to like it... Any ideas as to why? However, my daughter loves it, so...

I like the mix of the large white tiles with contrasting ones in a smaller size shown in the 3rd picture. In my shower I used 12x24 stacked vertically with Emser Ombre blue stacked horizontally along the shower's back wall. I'm not fond of the tile your daughter likes either (particularly the color) but I do like these Emser Express blue tiles except "Linear".

I can’t get over how similar the Emser Express Tile is to the one I show!

The Emser is 3 x 12 which might work better... Then I could do the sides in 3 x 12 white? What do you think?

What grout color should I use? I think white would look best all-around but I worry about staining issues.

Hi everyone, Thanks for your feedback and compliments! It looks like I am on the right track! I've been staring at the tiles since yesterday trying to make up my mind. DH is not as crazy about the Tantrum tiles, so we might go for subway tiles everywhere, except behind the cooktop. For the wall behind the cooktop, we might go for mosaic tiles similar to the ones "Blakey" is using behind her laundry wall. I hope she does not mine me posting this picture. I am including a close up shot of my granite to give you an idea of how "busy" it looks.

I can see the appeal, terriks, but I think the Platinum, while a lovely color, is too blue for your scheme. Rather than the color picking up the tones in the tile, I think it's putting the colors into the tile - both your shades are reflected in it in your photo - and I think a slightly warmer companion to the red would give you a more natural effect. Revere Pewter would be worth a look, and if it's still too taupe for you (it's paler and less brown than Rockport), take a look at Balboa Mist (also B. Moore), which is clearly gray, but warmer than Platinum. I think with the reflected colors in the tile, the warmer gray will be much prettier and more like mother-of-pearl, which is what I see in your tile.

You know, you might want to consider a Saarinen tulip table (a version of the design, as the real ones are very spendy) to go with those marvelous chairs. The simple base and a pretty wooden top would look great with them, and you wouldn't have to contend with an apron or the feet on a more conventional pedestal. The color scheme is OK, but personally I would not choose the same type of suede fabric for the love seat. Also, I would probably also go for something drastically different in style for the love seat if you're going to mix and match. To me, looking at this, it feels like you tried to match them but couldn't, they're so similar in shape, all the way down to the leg shape. Now keep in mind that it is just my opinion and that I am not an interior designer, so I could be completely wrong! Servanne Littfin Design

I don't mind the color. The overall look will give you a very geometrical pattern. I think the work on installation will have to be very precise otherwise you might not be happy with the end result. Personally, I would not go for this tile.

I'd use white grout with the Emser Express. The blue is subtle so I'd want a grout color to make the tile itself stand out.

I went to a Emser Express store today, but they don't expect this tile to arrive until early March. I can wait, but I'm leaning back toward my original choice of 4x12 white subway with light gray grout... :)
