Cool Guy Showing up...........

This guy showed up right outside my kitchen window one day, on a dying ash tree. He stayed long enough for me to run and get my phone to take a pic. Such cool birds!

For many years I had a female cardinal doing that at my windows. Drove me nuts. haha I ended up putting a fake owl at several windows, which helped. She showed up for so many years, made me sure that she had taught her daughter to do that too.

Signet, remember you are also a zone 6 which means that you get frost a lot later than we do in zone 2 or 3. So, being that replanting the iris needs to be with enough time to get the iris re-established before freeze up here in zone 2 - 3, that means that replanting should be done no later than the end of August. A friend of mine has hundreds and hundreds of iris here in the Brandon area and that is the advice that she gives. There is a problem though when buying irises in the fall here on the prairies because the Ontario and BC growers will not send out the irises to the nurseries and box stores until about the middle of September and then it is usually only the tall German irises and the occasional SDB that are sent. They do not ideally have time to get established before our freezeups. So, now, when buying some of these, I have grown them over in the house for the winter and planted them out into the garden in the spring. Personally, so far, I have never had a problem here with irises heaving out of the ground. I rather think that I would be unable to stomp them back into the ground because once my ground is frozen, it is frozen. A friend of mine lives in Dartmouth and she does have perennials heave out of the ground in the winter. I know that she is rather frustrated sometimes when it happens. Do you feel the same way Signet? I have had problems with deer coming and pulling/nibbling on the iris just before freezeup and thus leaving the iris on the top of the soil for the winter, but that is a different story. Brenda

Oh Amber I wish you were there with me, he was flitting all over the place and so very cool. I hope he returns. I wish you were here with me more often, actually. I felt we spent so little time together at the swap last weekend (sigh) Wish you were closer so you could sit with me in the evenings by the pergola THAT would be so wonderful. You are a true delight. I have always been too impatient with my picture taking. Ill-Man gave me a few hints, Like click like crazy until ya get the perfect shot and take a deep breath before you shoot. Well, that's way too much multi tasking for me!! I've seen this method in one of many books/phamplets that I have read over the years. Yes, the cattle panels would be a large up-front costs. I found some at a farm auction that had been cut to make teepees/trellises for peas and such, for much less than retail new price. I think I paid $50 for 50' of trellis and another 5-7 full panels. I paid more than the scrap metal people wanted to pay. Which is a thought for metal fencing/rebar or panels, check with your local scrapper and put them on a 'mission' to find things for you. Just expect to pay them more than they would get at the scrap yard. My son scraps and checks with me before he takes a load in. I've received lots of things, including greenhouse film that had never been opened (1 1/2 rolls). Great finds. Marla

Thanks for the quick response, and I'll follow your advice. PLEASE, post some photos of that cool blue-single when it flowers. I'm curious to see just how "blue" the blossoms really are. If the plant makes flowers that are anywhere near the colors shown in the photo, you'll have a winner. Good luck with the plants. BTW, that display of single, white/pastel pink blossoms is just stunning. It reminds me of Mr. Ko's "FOCUS". So much nicer than those gaudy, double, neon- pinks that are all too common. Less IS more. Implication is the tree is being killed by bugs it can hear inside of it. (Maybe emerald ash borer for instance). Or perhaps it was checking to see if there were any.

Either way if the tree is going to start falling apart you won't of course want it near your house.

Maybe you already knew about this but I see it really is a "guy":

Thanks Embothrium. We have dead ash trees all over our property, sadly. We have about 33 acres, so there's lots of them. And we have tons of ash saplings and are just hoping some predator shows up that can eat the borers. Fortunately, this particular ash in the picture seems to be dying a lot more slowly than the others. But thanks for the heads-up! I did have to look up the diff between male and female, I did notice the red "mustache" in the male, but missed the difference in their heads, so thanks for that link too!

I can sort of relate, bengz.....we have carpenter bees around here and they have made tons of holes in our soffits (?). Then all the various woodpeckers go after their eggs, making the holes much bigger. We'll need to replace it all someday so they can start all over again. I wonder if your pileated was after bugs/larva?? We live in the woods, so hopefully they can find big trees to peck on. But the carpenter bees eat holes in the posts around our fences and garden too. Oh well..........
