'And I want it all to be low maintenance'... A bit of a rant

You have stated very well what the dilemma boils down to, and all you can do is give the client the information and your opinion, and let them know that THEY will have to live with their decisions. I am a firm believer that informed clients make better gardeners, but you can't always get them to spend money they don't have. I will say that for clients that were on tight budgets and had pernicious weed problems that could not adequately be resolved in the short term time frame of the project, I have resorted to widescale use of weed fabric in combination with heavy mulching, and made use of free tree trimmings from an arborist to stretch the client's dollars. I also made sure to pay regular visits over the next couple of years to "grade" them on their weeding efforts! I think if you get clients involved, (assuming that they aren't totally overwhelmed with parenting to the exclusion of gardening), and the design is something that they were involved in and take an interest in maintaining, then they just might step up to the plate and weed! If they don't do so, it never hurts to connect them with a good maintenance gardener, and to network sufficiently so that you can recommend some....See Morelow maintenance low water landscaping - please help!
Comments (19)Your yard looks great! I realize its been a year but I would love to see current pictures:) I am facing a very similar situation and was wondering what you ended up planting on the berm? Also curious to know if you had the rest of the juniper removed? We have a large one in our yard that has kind of taken over and are thinking about having it taken out and replaced with something more manageable as far as size and trimming needs, but hopefully as drought resistant since it is a difficult area to water....See Morelow-maintenance small front yard ideas?
Comments (6)Which way does the house face? That will have big influence on what you can grow. To my mind, there are serious scale issues. The front steps are too big, and the plants are too small. So the whole effect is of a toy landscape where everything is whatever size the toy store sells. As for low maintenance, the lowest is 'checkbook gardening'. You hire a lawn care company, and spend a few seconds paying them once a month. Annuals are about a high maintenance as you can get, since they need mulching, weeding, watering, and deadheading. Established shrubs need mulching, weeding, and pruning. How much pruning depends on the exact variety of shrub....See MoreNeed help creating a low maintenance yard
Comments (11)Look into PlantSelect.org. They've tested a variety of perennials, shrubs, and trees that do well on the Front Range (you'll find the plants at various nurseries around town). Garden in a Box is a great way to get a pre-planned garden. You can buy kits in the spring with all the plants you need or just download their plans and buy the plants on your own. https://resourcecentral.org/gardens/ It's too late in the season to plant now so start working on what you want for next year. Ideal planting time is April-May before it gets hot, then again in September. BTW, we don't cover shrubs here; look for zone 5 plants. You can try some more sensitive plants (rhodies) but you'll need just the right environment and some luck to succeed. Test your soil first to see what nutrients are needed and just how alkaline the soil is.
