They get about 12 - 15 feet if you let them. I keep mine only as tall as I can reach and I have trained the lower branches horizontally (I planted 4 within 2' of each other and keep the inside branches either pruned or trained away from the center "light well." They are more like persimmon bushes than trees). If you summer prune them to keep them shorter it may be a factor in bringing them to fruit sooner. I read it takes up to 5 years for persimmons to start fruiting but mine fruited the 2nd year and I got ~100 fruits by the 3rd year. Jiro is what is sold as Fuyu in this country.

Tonytran, the execution of the air layering is perfect. But from my point of serious sight better instead of making an air layering, to graft on the most appropriate rootstock (depending on terrain), if it is a land with very moist soils, it is best to use Diospyros virginiana, and for the driest land Diospyros Lotus is better . In your case with air layering, what you get will be a variety with a rootstock Diospyros kaki ( and no one knows how it will behave in different types of terrain) , although usually performs well. There is a boy from San Diego, who has problems with his kakis grafted in Diospyros Lotus (usually this rootstock has problems in humid lands, as this rootstock has a very shallow root system, only deepens in the land , about 40-50 centimeters ) while the Diospyros virginiana has a very deep root system (this rootstock is more resistant to soil moisture and provide to the grafted variety increased resistance to fungal diseases), next February , I will send some seeds of this rootstock. The difference between the two rootstock is like night and day. It seems that the rootstock Diospyros virginiana, is not widely used in the United States is this true? Best regards Jose

Hi Tony, Beautiful pics. I see your photo of Snowqueen nectarine. Can I safely assume you grew that fruit & did not buy it at the grocery? Seems like a silly question, but... most reports I've seen say that Snowqueen is one the most highly-rated nects for flavor, but is NOT cold hardy beyond Zone-7, which is why I have not attempted growing it on my vacation property in Zone-6b. Are you growing Snowqueen in the ground in Zone-5A Nebraska? Did it survive this past winter? If you are successfully fruiting Snowqueen in Zone-5A, then all bets are off! How old is the tree? We went up to Afton Va today for Edible Landscaping's first annual persimmon festival. The weather was clear and sunny. There was a table loaded with different varieties of oriental persimmons to sample, plus persimmon ice cream, persimmon pudding and persimmon cake. They said they would put the recipes up on their web site later. We had a tour of the nursery orchard, looking not only at the persimmon trees, but hardy pomegranates and hardy kiwis jujubes and che, picking and sampling the ripe fruit. I came intending to buy a sheng to go with my ichi and hana fuyu (persimmons were 20% off) but I couldn't resist the pomegranate from Turkmenistan. Wish I had room for both but sheng will have to wait. Now if I dug up a Japanese maple and brought it to the spring swap.... I didn't see any familiar faces in the crowd. Were any of you there? If not, try to make a note on your calendar for next year's festival and a place in your garden for a beautiful persimmon tree.
