I'm not wanting to plant anything in particular, it's just that I'm trying to compare my garden yield with some sort of standard. Curiosity, mostly. In the case of your radishes, perhaps the long row yields 4 pounds of radishes, each one 2 oz., in an area 96 inches long and 4 inches wide. That's 2.4 square feet. Perhaps the radishes planted very close together are also 2 oz each, so you're getting 4 pounds in less area. Now on the flip side, perhaps those radishes crammed close together only average 1.5 oz each. Now you're getting 3 pounds per 2 square feet, or 1.5 lb/sq ft. Whereas a row planting gave 1.67 lb/sq ft. I'm just pulling numbers out of the air - actually I figure SFM is a lot more efficient than row planting, but without any numbers to back it up, how can you tell? It all really comes down to what you enjoy and what works for you, but if people are selling a methodology on how efficient it is, then its efficiency should be demonstrable. And in any case, I want to know if me growing 16 pounds of potatoes in 22.5 sq. ft. is average, above average or under average. I also want to know, as I plant things in the space that the potatoes occupied, what would give me the biggest bang for my buck. I can find supermarket prices, but I can't find yield information. Like I said, this is mainly curiosity, because I've already planted half the potato area with beets and turnips. I think I'll plant some chard next to them.

O Although I no longer live in Houston, I still go back and shop at some of the nurseries. Some of my favorites are: Buchanan's Native Plants Houston's largest and the Heights' favorite garden center devoted to Texas native plants and organic gardening. MAAS Nursery located in Seabrook, Texas just SE of Houston. They had a huge selection of great plants. And I used to go to Teas Nursery in Bellaire, but they are no closed. It's so sad because they have been around for a long, long time. Teas Nursery Company traces its history to 1843. Good luck!

There are some very pretty rugs of polypropylene but what I found that I was not sure how to handle was absorption of odors. I had one in the laundry room and one in the kitchen area. I understood in a small area like the kitchen where there is a lot of foot traffic, food odors and fairly confined by cabinets, that odors could trap in the rug but my laundry room is quite large as far as laundry rooms go and not a lot of traffic (at the time no cats or dogs and no children) just me doing a load of laundry or so a day and ironing for a couple hours in that room once or twice per week) but nothing that should have caused a rug to gather odors and yet the rug had such an odor we had to throw the two of them away. My gardener thought they smelled so bad, even he did not want to take a chance on taking them home and he is usually all up for anything I am going to toss.
