Hi everyone- Garbage day today and came across this carassula (at least, I think that's what it is). Picked it up, brought it home, and looking for some guidance on how to bring it back to life. Will have some time to read up on the thread tomorrow, but if anyone has specific experience/links you'd recommend, I'd love to hear/read. I've never owned one of these. Images below. Here are some details: The soil is very compact When I move the rocks away, it can barely stand on it's own so it most likely has few fine roots Extremely top heavy, so pruning at some point will be a must Branches dip below the main branching point/have grown down and then are attempting to grow back upwards Looking for guidance on how much to root-prune if there isn't fine root system, and when I should prune the top back so that when I root-prune/re-pot it can stand on it's own without falling over (at same time as root-prune or after root-prune once new growth shows). When it IS time for top pruning, where to prune and how far back I can cut those dippers so it's less leggy and more full/self sustaining, weight-wise. My gut based on former knowledge with other plants is to bare-root, root-trim, repot in something loose like turface. Water until it runs clear. Hold fertilizer (cactus/15.20.20) until new growth. Keep out of direct sun, but keep outdoors in bright indirect light. Let me know if I'm off. Midwest-based and finally staying above 55 at night! Thank you, thank you, thank you, wise souls!

I think you’ve got Crassula ovata ‘Minima’ or ‘Crosby’s Compact’. Idk the difference tbh:) maybe someone can help explain the difference. Check out this post. It looks different now, but I’m pretty sure it will look different once it gets a little bigger.

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 I'm in zone 6a in Canada, and it's underneath a grow light on a desk nowhere near a window. The window in the photograph was merely for natural lighting. They don't get particularly cold, but the entire house is cooler than it would be in spring/summer. They're mature plants, but I cut them up to propagate so while they're mature, they have young roots still. There are spots that have appeared recently, on some new and some older leaves. It all happened at the same time regardless of the age of the leaf

Justarandomguy I had to take a look and see if you made other posts to get a feel of what the issue at hand may be because you didn’t explain what’s going on, only posted pics. Looks like you’ve already posted about this plant. The issue at hand is the plant is dropping its leaves? About a month ago Rina suggested what your next plan of action should be when she suggested that it would be a good idea to unpot and check the roots. If a plant is on the decline and you can’t see what could be causing the problem above the soil line, then it’s time to unpot and check the roots below. I can see that your plant is not getting enough light because the leaves point down. This could be an issue because etiolated growth is weak flimsy unhealthy growth. I keep my little guy outside and see how sturdy and compact the plant is. Are you able to put your plant outside or give it more light?
