Repairing door jamb split by door closer

Hi folks, the pneumatic closer attached to the bottom of my storm door split the bottom of the jamb where it was attached. See the picture.

I am trying to figure out repair and future prevention.

I could glue the split piece and patch up the jamb, but the closer will destroy it again.

Is there some sort of a C shaped metal plate that I can attach to the bottom of the jamb to make it strong?

Something like this?

This product goes further than making a C around the middle of the jamb. It's pricey and I don't like the sleeve mechanism.

Any ideas on reinforcing the bottom jamb?

I thought of moving the closer to the top of the door, but I see the previous owners had put a similar closer there before (see four holes on the top of the jamb) and the closer will probably destroy the jamb there.

I can't put the closer in the middle of the storm door.

Thoughts?
