Murphy bed

Before “convertible” sofas came into vogue, the Murphy bed was a commonplace fixture in small apartments. It was simply a bed which folded or swung into a closet for concealment during the hours when it was not in use. It was invented by an American named William Lawrence Murphy (1876 – 1950) whose other contribution to social advancement have gone unrecorded.

I've never seen an actual Murphy bed. No doubt they would be very popular in micro-sized apartments where sq is at a premium.

It's one that I remember DF using regularly! I was surprised to hear from DH that DF would swear pretty vehemently. He never swore around us, his children, and Sam Hill was about as "colorful" that he would get.

Sight for sore eyes A very old expression and means “a very welcome sight,” especially one that is unexpected, such as the sudden appearance of an old friend. The Oxford Dictionary of English Proverbs gives as an example this quotation from a book published in 1836: “What a sight for sore eyes it would be to see Garrick act.” In Jonathan Swift’s “Polite Conversation” (1736) he wrote: The sight of you is good for sore eyes.”

stacey, my brother has a tiny, studio sized condo that used to be his office (now retired) that he is now in the process of remodeling into a functional living space as a back up to the boat where he currently resides. A Murphy bed is a prominent feature of the new design.

The great thing about Murphy beds is that you would never know you had one unless it was pulled out for sleeping. When not in use, they just look like a built in storage unit!

My first apartment had one and it was great, put it up and closed the doors. It was a one room apartment, very compact but comfortable.
