Hardie lap siding

We are building a house and like the look of the Hardie Board lap siding that has a 5 inch reveal. Our builder commented that it's likely to have more "panel flare" at the bottom than the more narrow 4 inch reveal. We don't understand what this might look like, and can't find information anywhere about a so-called panel flare.

Nancy. I believe it is the way it is laid that creates this look. The 5 inch will be more noticeable than the 4 inch. I would ask the builder for homes that they have done with both and do a drive by and see if this is noticeable and which you prefer.

You should have stopped your builder and had him explain.

I don't understand why people come here with this type of question.

If someone tells you something and you don't understand -- ask them to explain until you do understand.

We have the Artisan siding in our build and we love the way it looks. Our house is a few weeks away from completion, so I can't speak to any significant experience with it. For us, the siding was available only as factory primed and we had to paint it on site. We did not do the mitered corners as our builder told us that would add to the installation cost significantly. He also said that the mitered corners could be susceptible to damage (if for example, you run into it and chip a piece off, etc.). For us, the cost difference between the thin siding and the Artisan was about $4,000.

I feel like this color always goes one of three ways for me. Either it’s very grey or it pulls green and then sometimes just a touch of blue comes out. We are considering this color on a colonial style home.

I also don’t know what this means and would ask for examples. Ours is 6”, if the reveal is, the amount showing?

For their HardiePlank Lap Siding Hardie uses the traditional term "exposure" for the vertical dimension showing. What the contractor is talking about is traditionally called "cupping" which can occur because the flat untapered plank is supported at the top and bottom with a slight space behind the center part. I assume the cupping is caused by overdriving the nails.

Traditional "clapboard" siding is tapered allowing the siding to lie flat with no space behind it and it has a thicker butt and therefore a stronger shadow line.

The most common plank is 8 1/4" tall with a 1 1/4" overlap and a 7" exposure but Hardie offers exposures of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 , 9 and 10 3/4 inches.

It would take some serious overdriving of nails to cause cupping in a 5" exposure plank. I suspect the builder would charge more for the shorter siding.

Your builder should be able to make you a full-scale mockup using a couple of scraps of siding to help you understand the concern.

He probably has a lot of the 4" from a mistake he made on a previous job.
