Mixed Messages About Textured Quartz Kitchen Countertops

Jim Meyer

Every time we look at samples of quartz for our new kitchen countertops we end up with dark grey / black colors with a textured finish. Different brands have different names for these finishes: Suede, Concrete, Brushed, Leather....But it is really what we like.

However, a little poke around the internet suggests it would be insane to opt for these. They will stain easily and will be impossible to clean. We get the feeling if we let our guard down and miss that spot of kettle water when pouring tea we will regret it the rest of our lives.

However, the reps at showrooms ( and I get that these are salespeople) are giving us mixed messages. Some say that it is crazy to worry - either they say

  • it is simply not true (MSI)
  • that their product doesn't have that problem and is engineered to solve this problem and be as resistant as their polished surfaces (Silestone),
  • or that Yes, this is an issue but simply sealing the quartz counter as you would granite solves this problem (a fabricator that sells multiple brands.
  • And some say if you are not a really tidy person then maybe we should look at porcelain (too fragile) or Dekton (overkill and too expensive?).

Is polished quartz really the only option or can some textured products be safe for an average family of two? And mostly... Can we seal textured quartz and solve all these issues? We would be happy to do that.
