It's cost management - paying for return shipment, handling, return to supplier, etc., can be a much greater expense than Amazon's cost of the item itself. The return policy is a customer bennie that's part of the customer buying experience confidence it wants to present - that the customer knows and can rely on easy, no hassle, no questions-asked returns. That's of much greater value to Amazon than an item with less than significant cost. Because that keeps customer loyalty and leads to future sales.

Also, think of how many returns it must process weekly. The volume of incoming items must be staggering. For items of less than significant value, better to keep the customer happy and make up the loss with profit from future sales. That works.

They do ask questions. When I have reported receiving something broken, they wanted photos of the item plus photos of the box and all packaging. I always include photos with my complaint, if possible anyway. They generally don't want broken items returned, but if something is merely defective and they think they can repair it, then they may want it returned.

That happened to me last week. I bought some belts for my belt sander and mistakenly ordered the wrong size. I was going to return them via dropping off at Kohls but they issued a refund and said I didn't have to send them back.

I once ordered some Lawry's Seasoning Salt, low sodium because I couldn't find it locally. Somehow, I managed to order a case of it (12, I think). Since it was my error, I would have been ok if they had said no return, but I decided to try. They said to keep them! Well, what was I going to do with 2 lifetime's worth of seasoning salt? Everyone I knew who liked to cook got one in their Christmas stocking at our large Christmas gathering.

Yes, I’ve gotten that message. Sometimes I wish they would just take it back since it now puts the onus on me to get rid of it. I usually post things on my local Buy Nothing group and give it away.

Used to, but here lately, they have been asking for it to be returned. We have to go and take it to the UPS store and they pack it and send it back, they just give us the receipt. It's a big frigging hassle is what it is! I guess times are tough for even Amazon and they want their product back.

I have had something that was lost in transit arrive after a duplicate was sent. I too was told to keep it but recently USPS delivered something to a different house. Tried to retrieve it and could not. For whatever reason the person stated there was no way to change the notation to not delivered. When I contacted Amazon the electronic thing told me if the original package showed up to return the duplicate.

I did find out that when a package is delivered by USPS there is a GPS signal that is sent showing where that package was delivered.

It wasn't Amazon, but I once bought a Client Chair for the office. It arrived with a broken leg. They sent a replacement and told me to keep the first one, which I repaired. So now, I can have two clients.

I made lots of returns at the beginning of Covid, I bought/returned lots of hiking pants and hiking shoes before I found the right ones.

I've had Overstock and I think Wayfair tell me not to return something but never Amazon. Overstock was a big kitchen sink with a small dent, I gave it to my contractor.

I have never received a phone call telling me that Amazon had a problem but I seem to receive several emails about my account. The most recent one today was that a charge had been declined. Before that it was my Prime account had been suspended. I know enough to look at the address that the message was sent from and if it has anything other than Amazon such as a private address it is spam.

I haven't been told to keep something but I haven't returned anything in 4 or so yrs either. I have been receiving phone calls saying I owe them a hundred and some $s tho. I always hang up on those. I cxl'd prime last Feb and haven't ordered anything since last Dec / Jan. and I've never been able to buy from it without them having paid the $s FIRST. but I did call and ask after another call a few days ago, but then I also had another question to ask. I was connected to a real person in just a few seconds and I had put off calling because I don't like spending time on hold for such long periods of time. and usually being on hold with companies involves horrible loud music.
