Do all windows need curtains??

I’m wondering... do all windows need curtains??

This is our living area. It’s an open main floor plan and we love the large windows. I don’t know where to get curtain rods long enough to span the wall. I’m not sure how to hang curtains, but I think I’d like the warmth/ coziness that curtains contribute to.

I’d appreciate any thought or help on this one!!

I love your windows too! You have great light in your room.

To answer your question - no, all windows don't need curtains. Plenty of homes with great views don't cover up the windows at all. From your photo, it doesn't look like you need curtains for privacy, and your shades can probably take care of that anyway.

It sounds like you're interested in drapery panels just for the texture, pattern and visual warmth. You can absolutely do that!

You can hang draperies without a curtain rod that span all three windows. If you don't need the panels to operate, plenty of people have rods that are just wide enough for the panel itself. You would buy four rods a little wider than the distance between your windows. Stationary drapery panels about twice the width of the rod would give you enough material to gather appropriately. (This can vary depending on the fabric you use.)

If you want the curtains to operate or at least close over the windows, you could look at three separate rods. You'd need a simple finial that wouldn't draw attention to the rod separation. Then you would have six panels, two per rod. With your window spacing, the rods might need to abut each other.

Buying pre-made drapery panels will save you money, but if you find a local drapery workroom, you can customize the length and width of the panels. The workroom can assist you with the measurements you need to take as well.

Also, make sure to look at how much space is behind the door adjacent to the windows when it's open. That might affect your plan!

You might consider doing full blown valance and drapes on the big double window and just do a matching valance for the corner windows. Or if it's fabric, have it made into matching roman blinds for all of the windows.

I think it's nice to have a somewhat consistent face on nearby windows but they don't have to be identical. I like things to look essentially "white" on the outside (or neutralish). But I don't think the treatments have to be identical, or even similar. One thing about bamboo blinds is depending upon the width of the grasses used, they are essentially Transparent when lit from behind. (As in, when it's dark out, the blind is down and the room is lit up). This gives people a false sense of security, I think, because I have had neighbors who would put down their bamboo blinds and then walk around completely naked in front of the windows. So you may want to have at least a sheer lining on the back of the bamboo for added privacy and a more neutral appearance.

I can’t see the curtains in your pic and IMO you do not have space for curtains in the breakfast area so a roman shade in the same fabric would be my suggestion there

The light is literally never in the other side, we get constant sun all day in here. I thought they were too dark till I tried light ones, they don’t look good. I think the dark curtains are ok, it’s such a light room. I can never get a decent picture in here. This was at 7am and these windows are tinted too.
