Chipmunk Hell
Comments (88)Over the last few months I have had some serious damage done to my yard, landscaping, and sidewalks by chipmunks which seem to be "dividing and growing" daily. At first I thought the one or two I saw was "cute"--even feeding them a couple peanuts. Boy, was I stupid. I tried to dissuade the chipmunks by repellent powders, letting my indoor cats roam the backyard, and filling their holes but as everyone already knows none of that works. Meanwhile I am having hundreds of dollars of flowers uprooted and/or eaten, holes dug everywhere, and undermining of my garden edging and walkways. I bought two Havahart 0745 traps (from Amazon) and within 15 minutes of unboxing them had a chipmunk trapped. My initial plan was to "relocate" the chipmunks, but with experts saying you need to move them anywhere from 2, 5 or even 20 miles away, I quickly realized that with the large number of chips I'm dealing with that it would be a logistical nightmare (and probably not very nice to the homeowners in the new area) to try and relocate them. Like Alice, I too believe that drowning is a cruel way to exterminate even vermin/pest animals. This is why I bought the Havaharts and didn't use the bucket of water method. I won't go so far as to call someone mentally disturbed if they do so, but I will certainly call that person ignorant (not utilizing a more humane method of extermination or realizing the panic and suffering the animal goes through) and callous for being able to stomach the thought of an animal desperately struggling for air. So rather than dumping the chip off in someone else's yard, I immediately ran out to the local big box store and purchased a pellet gun--you can get a decent quality rifle for less than $60 most places. I came home, loaded a single lead pellet, aimed between the bars of the havahart and performed an instant and humane extermination. If one lives "in the city", you can buy a air-powered pistol instead of a rifle, making it less conspicuous. They are practically silent, relatively inexpensive, and readily available. Lastly, drowning animals (even vermin) IS considered by most local laws to be inhumane and cruel. See below for an interesting story of a man in NJ that was arrested, charged, and fined for animal cruelty for live-trapping squirrels and drowning them in the cage. More interesting? He was turned into police by his wife. Even more interesting? This particular link is from Field and Stream--a hunting enthusiast site. Read the article comments, though...even among hunters Drowning is considering cruel by most and even "sick" by some. Here is a link that might be useful: Man fined for drowning squirrels...See MoreI am in appliance decision hell! Help!
Comments (10)I labored over these decisions for months, as well. Switching to a pro-range instead of separate cooktop & wall ovens would have made my layout allot easier to figure out! Plus I loved the look, but from a pure functionality standpoint separate made more sense to me. As to the wall ovens, I feel your pain there too! I did decide on the Advantium over a single convection oven. I love the idea of two ovens, but two full sized ovens were overkill. We'll be emptynesters in just a few years! Here's how I finally made my decision. I decided that I really wanted a built in microwave. My current micro is above my oven, but has the trim kit. I never really liked the look. Anyway, after pricing built in microwaves I realized that for appx. $100 more I could have the Advantium. I will gladly pay $100 for all the Advantium offers. My only trouble now is that I cannot decide between 120 vs 240! I was driving everyone, including myself, crazy over this kitchen remodel too. That is until I realized that it is a process & I should treat it as such. I actually decided to do my remodel in stages - each decision affects another - so this is my way of working through it. I just couldn't visualize it on paper & 2x2" samples. My new fridge & DW arrived yesterday. The new configuration of my fridge (single door opening to counter space) will make my kitchen more functional & might lead to an easier remodel. If it does not then a major remodel will be in order. Next will be any changes/moving of the cabinets & granite countertops. Last will be the ovens as I'm still stuck on my "which Advantium" decision. I will then be able to make a more informed decision of the color, SS vs Blk, once the Uba Tuba is in place. So, to make a long story short TAKE YOUR TIME! Kitchen remodels are expensive; not a place to make hasty decisions just to get it done (Words of wisdom here!) Good luck!...See MoreI Need to make a style decision re: my claw foot tub feet
Comments (19)Ah, Golddust, you do not want to do what I did (or didn't do). This is an 1850 house, and the plumbing pictured is the only option. In order to pull it off, the tub needs to be raised up. Before the remodel/repainting, it sat on four ugly wood blocks (courtesy of a former owner). My contractor decided to build a more attractive platform. Nice idea, but then unrelated events were set into motion and he ended up quitting my remodel and going into another business. This was a blow because he did a great job on other areas of the house, and the very rural area in which I live isn't exactly overrun with reliable workers. Since then I've approached two other contractors about finishing the job. One sounds like he might actually do it.....one of these days. In addition to the plumbing/platform, the room needs new wiring over the sink, and cabinet hardware installed. Meanwhile, after a lot of time spent looking forward to taking a bath (yes, we have a stall shower, thank heavens), my hip arthritis has progressed to the point where I'm no longer able to sit on the floor, and I have serious doubts about my ability to get in and out of that tub. So the way it looks now, it's possible the tub will never be usable in my lifetime--or, if it is, I won't use it. That's the long answer. :-)...See MoreI'm In Kitchen Decisions Purgatory -- Please Help!!
Comments (23)WOW -- you guys have given me so much good stuff to think about. All who pointed out that my inspiration shots don't include any colored tile or other permanent elements other than the wall paint -- that was really eye-opening. So thanks, rob p, buehl, sailormann, lascatx, and debsan. I am now thinking about going a different direction with that element. The white cabinets, white subway tile, and marble counters with a warm green or yellow on the walls, and bringing in color with things like displayed items, and possibly also kitchen table and chairs. @kateskouros: What you describe sounds just lovely. I'm sure your kitchen is going to be beautiful! @elizpiz: I wish I had room for an island, but it was either an island OR a kitchen table. I really wanted the old-fashioned kitchen table, so that's what I'm getting! However, I've yet to buy it, so I will definitely think about a colorful one. And thanks for the attic link. Great pictures there to get ideas from. @chachashea: I can't wait to see pictures when your kitchen is done! Another thought I've had is that I am getting one custom-built cabinet piece, which will sit next to the table and house things like laptop and TV, with cubbies for mail and bills and magazines and such. I was going to ask the GC to paint it white to match the cabinets, but now I wonder if I should have it painted yellow or green (whichever I don't paint the walls). That might be really nice. As much as I love white cabinets, my eye is always drawn in pictures to the painted pieces in old kitchens too. Now for the backsplash -- I wonder if it would be too boring just to continue the white subway tile and paint, and then mix it up a little bit higher up on the wall with a picture, or a starburst clock, or something like that. One thing I'm still mulling too is whether the white subway tile should go all the way up between counter and cabinet, or stop short to expose paint color. What do you all think? Too "unfinished" without pencil or cap tile in black or another color, or could this work where the tile is all white? Thanks so much again! Liz...See MoreJennifer Hogan
