How to ask the right questions when you have a design dilemma.

Before I was a stay at home mom, I was a college and public librarian. One key thing I learned was that often what a patron initially asked me about was not what they needed help with at all. I had to learn to lead them to what they really needed to know in such a way that kept them from becoming frustrated when I didn't answer their initial question.

I've noticed that happens quite often when people post here with a design dilemma. Someone might ask for art suggestions when they don't know style they're going for is or someone might ask for lighting suggestions when the real solution is to change their window treatments or lighten their wall color because no amount of lighting changes will accomplish what they want, which is a brighter room.

I thought it would be helpful to have a sticky thread with advice for how to figure out what your problem is so that you can solve the actual problem you have.
